peter, $520 a week isn't that bad.
you don't need millions of dollars to talk to women.

No but I do need self respect.

Earn that shit.

I'm talking to you real man. If you feel like you've abused yourself -- the only way to feel like a man again is to go through VOLUNTARY SUFFERING.

Work out till you bleed, go through alchi withdraw, starve yourself, whatever it takes to feel like a man again.

The amazing thing is I'm 3/4 of a fifth into a bottle of Seagrams and yet I can think clearly. What the hell is wrong with that picture?

Re: I think I'm an alcoholic
There are MANY distractions in life, by designed. Alcohol, 500 TV channels, video games, work, college and school, we are too busy to ever find truth and fulfill our life's goals.

You think you are on the road to Miami Florida for vacation. Can't waite. Driving really fast with the radio blairing load rock music. We've all done it.

You pass a road sign that reads Toledo, Ohio straight ahead. Your react with disbelief, change the radio station and continue at full speed. Another road sign passes that reads Cleavland, Ohio 20 miles.

You have been going the wrong way against many warnings, distracting yourself with life's pleasures.

This condition is epidemic resulting in a society that is a spiritually bankrupt wreck.

Amazingly I feel very self aware both when I'm sober and when I'm medicated. It's something I have difficulty coming to terms with because I know alcoholism destroys so many lives. I'm sure it's having a negative effect on mine as well. I just want to stop. I just want to stop.

Okay thanks for putting up with my alcoholic rant and pity party. I'm going to finish off the rest of my fifth of Seagrams and pass out on my friends floor like I do every night.

You guys are awesome. G'night.

1 32 oz bottle of whiskey per night is excessive. I know that. Yet I can down a bottle of Seagrams per night.
 Quoting: Family Guy

gasp

32 drinks per night? (1-oz per)

Yes, that is WAY excessive.

I would stop, if you want to live that is.

Re: I think I'm an alcoholic
up until about 2pm every day I swear that night will hold the promise of no alcohol, but about the time 4pm rolls around I reconcile that reasoning in favor of a trip to the liquor store.
 Quoting: Family Guy

That's how I was. Every morning, I would say, in the most reasonable way, you know, I've been drinking too much lately. I really ought to cut down. So tonight, just for one night, I'll skip it. That won't be hard. And I would feel really good about that all day.

Then when I got off work I would go straight to the liquor store, buy a 12 pack, and go home and drink 8 beers.

It was terrifying. And it undermined my self confidence in a really insidious and destructive way.

You are smart to be thinking about this and it's a good sign that you are thinking about it and writing about it and asking for input and advice.

You can quit poisoning yourself any time. You know it will kill you if you keep it up long enough, right? You don't necessarily have to drink yourself to death. You could just get drunk and fall down the stairs, or pass out and sleep through a house fire, or lose all hope and commit suicide. Lots of different ways to go! But it doesn't have to be that way.

The biggest obstacle for me in quitting was admitting I was just another ordinary drunk. Everyone wants to think they're something special and that this stuff will never catch up with them. The way I put it was, it's hard to admit you're the guy on the side of the bus, you know? "Do you, or someone you know, have a drinking problem? Call this toll free number" jeez. Who wants to be the guy in the public service ad?

But what can you do! Once you get over the stigma or the blow to your ego, whatever it is, it's a lot easier after that. Just another schmuck who can't drink! The world is full of common ordinary flawed people like that! Sounds like you're one of them! :-) Sucks doesn't it! Sucks worse to not admit it, not realize it, and just keep going downhill, all the way, like so many people do. I've heard cirrhosis is a very painful way to die.

I never thought this could happen to me. I'm funny when I'm drunk. At least I think I am. I lost my job and medicate myself every night.

Should I seek help?
 Quoting: Family Guy

Find something to replace the drinking habit. Exercise, home repairs, woodworking, etc... something that you are interested in. Or sign up for some classes that will get you out of the house.

If you cannot resist the urge, there are a couple of drugs that will make you ill if you drink alcohol. You could see a doctor for these or find online.

Being "awake" can be very hard, but it beats the alternative, no matter what you may feel at a given "low" point. I wish you the best of luck. You are already ahead of the game if you are, in fact, self-aware; if you can come up with the tools to deal with living (this world is CRAZY), you can do anything you put your mind to. Go get 'em.

Re: I think I'm an alcoholic
Though I'm a good looking male my self esteem is at an all time low. I jack off when I need to release, but have no desire to approach a female because really what do I have to offer?

It's just one day at a time. My good humor keeps me afloat.
 Quoting: Family Guy

You are depressed - an indulgence of self pity.

You are clearly in pretty desperate circumstances, which are likely to get worse, if you are not careful. Spending all your money on drink will destroy you and all relationships.

Switch off the TV, computer, or games console etc., take a shower, then go out and find something to do, which will boost your self-esteem. Get tired, so you can sleep at night. Once you have your confidence back, opportunities will arise.

Alternatively revel in your own self pity, and ruin your life. GLP is not the best place to be, in your situation.

(BTW you are not a bag of laughs!) Good luck

 Quoting: Family Guy

1.Alcohol is a poison
2.Slowly it will toxify and destroy your body
3.Continued drinking results in being unable to get drunk, and drinking just to be normal
4.Your family will suffer
5.Like any addict continue and you will lose everything
6.Your health does not belong to you alone it belongs to your family
7.Seek psychological support, substance addiction is often a symptom of severe unhappiness in an area in your life.

Remember:

You are a child of the universe no less than thje trees and the stars you have a right to be here.

And

To be imperfect is perfectly human.

Don't let this world defeat you, learn to grow as a person, find peace and love for our shared humanity.

Re: I think I'm an alcoholic
Family man...I've been exactly where you are now, high tolerance, drinking every day, suspecting I was an alcoholic etc. I woke up ever morning and swore it off, and found myself drinking every night and never suffered much from hangovers. This merry-go-round went on for years, as a result, my family suffered, I lost jobs, and ended up with dui's. The fact is, if you think you have a problem with alcohol, you probably do.
You don't have to hit bottom to stop drinking... you can get off the elevator at anytime.

AA is a good place to start. You will find wonderful, friendly, supoortive, people who can totally relate to you. AA is a spiritually oriented program, and recovery is an "inside Job". If this doesn't work out for you, there are other alternatives.
Please seek help today, pick up that phone, my friend. and dial
the AA hot line number. Someone most likely direct you to the closest meeting, or take you there personally.

I wish luck and success, it's not easy crawling out of the bottle, but it is doable.

I'm not into labels, but I feel the need to get buzzed every night. The few nights I tried not drinking I couldn't get to sleep so it draws me right back to the Whiskey. I don't want to be this way any more.
 Quoting: Family Guy

I went threw this as well. I took some Tylenol nighttime to get to sleep for about 3 nights

after I quit drinking, then I didn't need it anymore after that. It is really hard to learn other habits

to relax you after you get used to having some drinks to go at it the fast easy way. For me, the best thing is

getting lots of exercise so that I am so tired at night, I just want to sleep =)

Dozens of them. Armed to the teeth. I'm outnumbered. Outgunned. But the alley is crooked, dark, and very narrow. They can't surround me. Sometimes you can beat the odds with a careful choice of where to fight.

Do you think you lost your job because you drink too much? Most drug and alcohol counselors say that you cross the line between social drinking and alcohol addiction when you start having consequences. Job loss, fights with family and friends, DUI tickets, etc. etc.

If you can't not drink without withdrawals, that's a pretty good sign too. If it bothers you, check out AA. Alternative, be a drunk.

Re: I think I'm an alcoholic
I coach my sons little leauge baseball team. On those days I obviously put off the urge to drink until 9pm or so. Is there such a thing as a controlled drunk? I never ever drink during the day, but only at night once I've determined the day is over. Yet every night I inevitably feel the need to medicate.
 Quoting: Family Guy

I was drinking just like this. I drank 4-6 glasses of 2-3 oz of rum a night. I was would drink to pass out every night so I could sleep. I went to the liquor store every day. I knew I was becoming an alcholic. I never drank during the day, and like you, waited until my day was over and then drink. I loved it and like you I could go weeks without it, and was ok. I wanted to drink a little, but nothing I couldn't handle.

One night a few weeks ago I drank an entire 5ht of rum and had no idea I did. I was falling down drunk and could not remember it at all. I could even walk up the stairs so my husband left me on the sofa. I woke up with NO hangover and no recall of the night before. I decided then and there to quit and I did.

I went to the doc and asked him to give me something to help me sleep. He gave me a very low dose ambien and this has done the trick. I'll be honest and say I've thought about having a drink, but I won't. I want to go at least 3 months without touching the stuff and by then I probably won't want to drink any more.

Get some sleep aids and hang in there! If you do take sleep aids DON'T DRINK!
