He was so good, you didn't need his image; Nothing but the voice. Why warm up the cameras; He didn't need them; better if it's the voice alone; that measured trusted voice telling America, ...the President has been shot' ......'the president is dead', ......... 'Lee Harvey Oswald is the killer' ............... 'Lee harvey Oswald has been shot'- ................... "lee harvey Oswald is dead". He was very good. The oldest drama retold in short sentences. He measured his speaking so that everyone would get every word clearly. He told the old story of a hero being cut down in his prime; Of revenge being visited upon the villain. America knew what had happened. Walter Cronkite had told us. |

If he was a former insider, he spent over 3 decades as a left-wing outsider questioning TPTB and taking them all to the woodshed with NO exceptions. RIP Walter. |

Cronkite had been standing at the United Press International wire machine in the CBS newsroom as the bulletin of the President's shooting broke and clamored to get on the air to break the news. However, cameras were not ready for use and Cronkite would be forced to break the news without them while one warmed up. |
