Suzanne Collins reports Baltimore City Police are defending their actions.
It was an experience 7-year-old Jesse Flayhart will never forget. He was arrested after he and two friends, 8 and 11 took a scooter, a go kart, and a wagon from a neighbor's yard. The boys were all handcuffed and taken to juvenile jail.
"They called the paddy wagon and put handcuffs on us. When the paddy wagon would stop my face would hit up against the metal," said Jesse Flayhart.
Jesse's mother says the boys need to learn theft is wrong, but she says metal handcuffs were unnecessary. She says the boys were given rough treatment by older boys in a lockup at the juvenile justice center, where they were held for hours.
"I understand if they did something wrong they need to be punished; I think it was too extreme. I think if they put them in a police car to the Northern District and had a nice scary talk with them," said Jaime Greeley.
Jesse's 8-year-old friend, Aiza was also arrested. His mother says it's outrageous that police arrested her son at 7 p.m. Friday, despite her protests. She said she wasn't able to get to him released from the juvenile jail until after midnight.
"He said I don't have time for no investigation, he's going to jail. So I stated my son is 8 years old. At that time my son grabbed me, hugged me and cried, 'I don't want to go to jail, Mommy,' said Toya Goodson, Ayiza'a mother.
The family of the third boy arrested, who's 11, had no comment. Police defend their actions saying they must divert young people from a life of crime. They cite cases of rowdy teens at the harbor, and a teenager charged with shooting a 5-year-old girl.
The man whose belongings were stolen says he does not think the two younger children should have been put in metal handcuffs or taken to the juvenile lockup. He says a scary warning from police may have been enough.
What lesson did 7-year-old Jesse learn from his experience?
"That I would never want to do it again. Because I would get arrested again," said Jesse.
The parents are also concerned about a policy that would put a 7 and 8-year-old in with older perhaps more dangerous teens who they say bullied their sons.
The Department of Juvenile Justice says the booking area where the boys were held is run by city police, although juvenile workers recommended they not be held. |

Quoting: the prophecyerExactly!!! NOT that its wrong to steal, or that he is a better person than to take some else's shit without asking. noooooooo that would be too difficult for him and his parents to beat into his little head. The real crux of the matter is that HE DOES NOT WANT TO GO TO JAIL!!!! Fuck the little rat bastards!!! Kids can and have killed people. The parents sound like complete tards... |

They learned EARLY what happens to thieves and people who steal from others. And what it is like to go to jail.
I bet they never do it again. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 700544Maybe that's WHY they were stealing, their Mother is a fucking asshole who didn't TEACH them NOT to steal. Maybe MORE time in jail will teach them something. . |
