Safety fears raised after plane wheel falls off
The Aircraft Engineers Association is calling for Virgin Blue to step up its maintenance program after one of the nose wheels fell off a plane at Melbourne Airport on Saturday.

The plane was preparing for take-off when a ground engineer noticed one of the wheels had fallen off.

The union says the airline does not check every plane before take off.

The Federal Secretary Steve Purvinas says it could have caused serious problems if the wheel had fallen off mid-flight.

"It depends what stage of flight this catastrophic failure occurred," he said.
