UPDATE:Eight dead in fiery NY car wreck
5-year-old crash survivor critical; driver identified

[link to www.poughkeepsiejournal.com]

BRIARCLIFF — A 5-year-old boy who lost his mother, his sister and three cousins to a fiery wrong-way crash on the Taconic State Parkway yesterday that also killed three people from Yonkers is recovering in critical condition this morning, police said.

Diane Schuler, 36, of West Babylon was driving two of her own children and three of her nieces home in a minivan about 1:30 p.m. yesterday when she entered the northbound Taconic going the wrong way, causing what amounts to the worst crash in Westchester County in 75 years.

Police will release more details at a press conference at 11 a.m. today.

The people killed in the other car from Yonkers were Guy Bastardi, 49, and his 81-year-old father, Michael Bastardi, and a friend Daniel Longo, police said.

"I've been with the state police for 24 years and I've never investigated anything so horrific, especially the fact that four young lives were lost," state police Investigator Joseph Becerra said.

The accident was the second wrong-way accident on the Taconic on Sunday after a two-car crash in Kent earlier in the day left five hurt.

Traffic on the Taconic Parkway was back to normal by 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Autopsies on the victims are scheduled for today. The four children who died were ages 2, 5, 7 and 9.

According to state police, a Long Island family in a red Ford Aerostar minivan was heading the wrong way in the northbound lanes of the Parkway around 1:35 p.m., carrying five children, when it crashed head-on into a Chevy Trailblazer SUV carrying three people from Yonkers.

Becerra said it is believed the minivan then careened into a Chevy Tracker carrying two people. That's when the impact from the second crash caused the minivan to roll down an embankment, toss several children out of the car and burst into flames, he added.

Passers-by stop to assist
Peter Deduvaj of Yonkers was heading north on the Taconic Parkway to visit his uncle in Mahopac. He was among the eight or so drivers who immediately pulled over to help.

Hawthorne fire Chief Joe LaGrippo and his unit were first on the scene to find the minivan engulfed in flames, including the female driver. Emergency personnel immediately blocked off the roadway and were able to rescue one of the children trapped in the burning vehicle.

(2 of 2)

"The work our men did today (Sunday) was phenomenal," LaGrippo said. "I've been in the business a long time and this is some of the best work I've ever seen."

The driver and four of the children in the minivan died at the scene.

The minivan's driver was the mother of the surviving child, and the other children were her nieces and her daughter, Becerra said.

Three adults in the SUV were also pronounced dead at the scene. The two people inside the Tracker suffered minor injuries and were taken to Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Sleepy Hollow.

Why the minivan was driving the wrong way on the parkway is unclear, as state police Capt. Michael Realmuto said the case is still under investigation. Weather conditions on the road Sunday were normal and police said they did not want to speculate on what could have caused the crash. Accident reconstruction teams from state police were at the scene piecing the case together. Police said they should have more details about the crash today.

The charred gray frame of the minivan sat perpendicular on the embankment for hours as several drivers in the southbound lane of the Taconic Parkway cupped their hands over their mouth in shock upon witnessing the accident. Several bright-colored articles of clothing from the minivan were dispersed along the grass.

The SUV was draped in white sheets as emergency personnel hauled away bodies from the scene on stretchers.

Police blocked off the Saw Mill River Parkway entrance to the Taconic for several hours as traffic backed up for several miles.

When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand.

Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!"

That's fucked up, but lol.

I saw an accident in NJ two years ago where a family wrecked a minivan, and two people burned. One managed to make it out and died on the pavement. I still can't get those images out of my head. But good god, eight people, a bunch of kids. I'm just beside myself. I also had a good friend of mine get killed on that same highway, the Taconic State Parkway.

It's sad, you can just what happened. She was not paying attention and yelling at the kids and drove the wrong way. I really feel for the family. All her sibling's kids died. That's fucked up. Don't entrust your kids to anyone.

Sucks about the three guys too. See what not paying attention does, assholes? Think about this the next time you're driving and texting and eating a taco.might not be the only thing you eat, but the last ting for sure....

Here's an interesting detail:

Another witness, Richard Rowe of Tarrytown, said in an e-mail that he was northbound on the Taconic.

“We could see the minivan coming towards us southbound in the far left northbound lane,” he wrote. “The minivan did not seem to swerve, get in the median, or move into any other lane. It was deliberately driving inside the lane, in the wrong direction, at a very high rate of speed. We were just north of the accident so it must have just happened after the minivan passed us. To us, the minivan seemed to be driving very deliberately in that lane, despite people honking and flashing lights at it.”

Well, if she thought she was in the right, she would be traveling "deliberately" without swerving at a high rate of speed. It's a dangerous highway with no shoulder. You better keep up the pace or get the fuck off.

So again, if she had a phone glued to her ear, her brain probably just didn't process what was actually happening, and she was on "auto-pilot" about how to drive on the Taconic.

Quite possible. Or she just simply thought she was in the proper set of lanes.

The Taconic is not like a lot of highways that have a smiple divider or somesuch dividing opposite directions. The lanes meander off quite a distance, so that you can't even see the opposite bound traffic lanes a lot of the time. For those who don't know this highway.

Lisa Acosta, 42, who lives across 14th Street from the house Schuler, her children and her husband, Daniel, called home, said Monday she was devastated to hear the news of the crash - and still can't understand how it happened.

"This is a road she could have done blindfolded," Acosta said. "Something's wrong."

Acosta said Schuler and her husband went camping "almost every weekend" at a spot up near Monticello, not far from where the crash occurred.

She said Daniel Schuler, 37, had not gone camping over the weekend - instead going fishing with his brother.

She said the Schulers moved into the house about seven years ago. She said Diane worked for Cablevision and Daniel worked for the Nassau County Police Department.

Yup, she was on the phone. She WAS doing it blindfolded, mentally speaking. She just took the wrong ramp and it was all over. Her brain never even registered the fact that she was on the wrong highway.

There's more to this story than what we know at the moment.

There were 4 adults in the minivan and 4 children. One adult died (the driver) and three kids (the fourth is in stable condition). Three additional adults died in the car she hit.

Now....what of the three adults in the minivan with her? I think we'll be hearing from them at some point, as to her mental status, etc. She was driving at a "high rate of speed" the wrong way, on a route she took every weekend. The drivers that saw her honked their horns and flashed their lights. At the very least, the surviving adults in the minivan with her know what happened.

I suspect we'll find out.

Prayers to the families all around.

It doesn't take much to get disoriented at those interchanges. And even though she knew the road, she may have taken a different exit than usual or somesuch. And with the mind on auto pilot like that, all she was seeing was "Parkway" not "wrong way."

Autopsy shows no medical condition. However, she called family and indicated that she was ill in some way that police won't release details of. However, she was aparrently ill enough for family to call police to search for her. I heard in another report that she was disoriented and couldn't tell family where she was.

Now is is just me, or does that sound like some freaky programming type shit?

maybe she was having a mental breakdown or extreme anxiety attack. if i had that many kids in the van with me i would be suffering from both.

i feel bad for the mom of the three cousins. i wish the boy who had survived had her for a mom. then at least she wouldn't have lost all her babies and he wouldn't have lost his mommy.
