What is the easiest way to check if a gold bar is actualy gold?

I need to check if a 900g gold bar is for real, i'll take it in to the jewlers, but is there another way? I am very suspicious of it, it looks like a paper weight becsaue it has felt on its underside. It has been represented as real.

This. Archimedes solved this problem 2200 years ago.

You're a fool if you're taking physical delivery of bullion in such quantities, though. The moment it leaves a certified vault, the value of gold plummets because - as you've discovered - it's hard to verify that it's still good. If you're buying gold, buy the title to gold in a vault somewhere - you'll have to pay fees for them to store it for you but compared to what you lose if you take the gold out it's worth it.

And if civilisation collapses to the point where such vaults become unreliable and your paper title to the gold there becomes worthless? Well, in that extreme case, you don't want gold anyway; you want guns and ammo.

You are incredibly naive and stupid if you don't do this. or take it to an expert.

I think an important thing to remember here is that it has no identifiable marks or serial #.

Even if it is real, its in a large quantity (too large to barter with for most things), and also, because it has no identifiable marks or serial number, no one is likely to want to trade for it. The banks wont buy it, and i think you would have to press pretty hard to get a pawn shop to buy it.

I would say fuck it, and use the money to buy gold maple leafs. That way there wont be any.....problems, for you.

btw it would be 29 oz not 32 oz. Gold (or troy oz.) is a different weight than normal oz.

okay i caculated 900/28.
I'm not buying it, it was left in a locked draw with the understandign that if something happened, it would be passed to someone as theirs. not me, but when i was shown it I got suspicious about its autheticity.
