Mismarking precious metals or mishallmarking jewelry karat comes under Treasury laws for counterfeiting. It doesn't seem to stop people though. There's a lot of 14K jewelry out there that is just plated white metal.

Buying coin or gov't issued bullion coins is relatively safe, but they should be inspected for "shaving" and other iniquities.

There's a lot of dishonest people out there particularly when it comes to $$.

Thamks for all the thoughts...I can safely say GLP has exposed a possible fraudster amongst the people I know. I am goign to play dumb and ask how much he wants for it, and see how far he will go. What a c~nt he is.

I used to work in a lab in Vancouver years ago and we had an assay lab as part of our services. When we got samples of gold to be assayed they would come in various shapes and sizes. A bar can be any damn shape. We even had an old prospector come in once and had us assay a brick of gold that he had been collecting over the years and it was in the shape that he had made himself.
We would either use a fire assay method (the most accurate and is used for determining ore concentrations) or we would use the atomic absorption method. Essentially to get a sample we would drill a very very small hole in the bar and collect the shavings.We would then dissolve the shavings in an acidic solvent and run it through the machine.
But if you've got 95.5 cubic cms of gold (19.3 gm/cm3)it should weigh over 1800 gms (about 4 lbs). Heck even if it was lead (11.35 gm/cm3)it should weigh over 1 kg.

Tungsten is inside the gold and tungsten has about the same density as gold, so your idea wont work.
