Re: “Wesley’s Jupiter Mark” of July 19, 2009 (WJM-09), the Case for an Unnatural Event
"2) The material expelled to the top of Jupiter will fall back down on Jupiter causing an overabundance of mass focused on a relatively small part of Jupiter’s surface. This will cause Jupiter to “indent” inwards at that spot. This will lead to a greater density also which in turn will create heat and turbulence, and possibly lead to cratering at the “dark spot”."
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 194596

I see some "cratering" around the area, the "cavitation" that we are seeing in D. Peach's pics.

I made a picture of jupiter with my telescope a few minutes ago. What is this object at the left???

[link to www.abload.de]

I`m going to make some other pictures later with a bigger telescope, looking if this thing still there. Here in germany it is two minutes before midnight.

The object at the left from Jupiter is still visible.

Maybe someone else with a telescope can confirm this or can tell me what this could be.

Not sure, over 11 minutes it moved and faded. You might ask an astronomer on another site.

D. Peach has a good one from the 10th on the same site we've been referencing....

Crank up the contrast a bit and you can see the "depression" effect fairly well....

here is a sharpened version of Damian's image,

Thanks for that, great enhancement!

Thanks! afro

But the credits should really go to F-Spot

a great open source program, very easy to use and very practical.

But I think is only for Linux...

Probably some dust/gas between Earth and Jupiter, quite dense to reflect light like that.

It's quick dispersion would indicate that it's close to Earth.

But I'm not an astronomer.
What specifically it could be I'm not sure.

What kind of dust/gas?...

Like Maximo's pic, you can begin to see the "cavity" effect present. I keep wanting to see greater clarity and resolution, but when I zoom in, of course, the resolution breaks up. Hubble, where are you?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 203352

Hubble is *there* and we're *here* and this is the problem!:-)

They probably have much better images of the entire process than anyone else in the world.

But NASA won't release it unless they are sure it's harmless.

I believe we'll have to continue our quest without them.

BTW, the appearance of indentation is clear IMO, but could it be an artifact of the image, an optical illusion?

I mean, how can we be certain if it is or not?

This is what I've been wondering also. The "dent" shows up on so many images, and the "mark" is supposed to be "gone", so "they" can't have both.

In other words they have to say "the dent is only the mark in conjunction with bleeding contrast", or they have to say "the mark is gone and there is still an obvious dent".

I found this video on YouTube of an astronomer that apparently recorded an impact on one of Jupiter's moons (Io) earlier this month. If you watch the vid, you see what looks like a vapor plume exiting the moon, and it looks similar to what is in your pic. It's a shooting gallery out there these days! hiding

makes more sense now. it's probably a dense bulk of gas or dust in between Earth and Jupiter, but what could have caused it?

Yes, but the mark is there and they cannot say otherwise.
Ikuo Takimoto's last image clearly shows it.

The existence of the indent may be arguable but not the persistence of the mark, now completing 2 months.

Agree... I'm trying to decide by looking at older images of the "dent" if it is more obvious now. This would tell us whether it's real and/or getting deeper or not. Can't tell yet though as measurements on this are hard to do.

Re: “Wesley’s Jupiter Mark” of July 19, 2009 (WJM-09), the Case for an Unnatural Event
Looking back at older pages of this very long thread now, I think it's safe to say that this Jupiter Event has gone on much longer than any agency or astronomy organization is willing to accept as "normal", yet we have heard no official proclamation of such.

As of today, two months have passed and the mark is still being imaged with ease. A "smudge" of very large size has formed to the east of the original mark, and the origin is still spotable at 216 long. 57 south lat (CM2). As can be seen with Theo Ramaker's animation, "black stuff" seems to continue to pour out from that location, sometimes more, sometimes less.

On many images what seems to show up is a "dent" when the mark is imaged on the limb (both sides). The verdict is still out on whether this is simply contrast bleed with the extreme darkness that the mark produces when imaged on the limb, or an actual "depression" forming on Jupiter as a result of the event.

From my measurements on a grid of Jupiter (CM2), the entire "smudge" or "depression oval" now spans from 50 to 60 south latitude and 217 to 190 longitude, very roughly speaking. This area described can best be seen on the enhanced pic from D. Peach on an earlier post.

It still may turn out that this unusual mark may completely go away with no other happenings, but since we have a stated theory which proposes an ongoing event, and to this point we do indeed have an ongoing event, my bets are now on this event being more closely described by the theory the OP has proposed.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 744930

from Spaceweather.com...this could be your answer....

SATURDAY NIGHT LIGHT SHOW: The phones started ringing around 7:30 pm EDT on Saturday night, Sept. 19th. All along the US Atlantic seaboard, police stations and news desks received reports of strange lights in the sky. John A. Blackwell of Exeter, New Hampshire, snapped this picture of the phenomenon:

"It was an impressive display," says Blackwell. "To the naked eye, it was visible for about a minute."

It looks like a passing comet or a giant, luminous amoeba. But this was pure rocket science. The cloud was created by a Black Brant XII sounding rocket launched from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. The rocket released a cloud of electrically-charged aerosols near the top of Earth's atmosphere to investigate the formation of noctilucent clouds or "NLCs." Mysterious NLCs form naturally around Earth's poles during the months of northern summer. On this September evening, researchers decided to see if they could create an artificial NLC at mid-latitudes; it seems to have worked.

Ground-based cameras and radars along the Atlantic coast monitored the experiment while the STPSat-1 satellite watched from Earth orbit. Principal investigators at the Naval Research Lab hope the data will reveal much about the microphysics of noctilucent clouds and the possible role of rockets in creating them.
