The situation could have ended worse for the homeowner. I'm not going to tell anyone what to do, but if you are going to shoot someone, shoot to kill and shoot until they are on the floor. When you shoot, no matter the result of the firing, or the intention "only meant to injure them" it is considered using deadly force. If you are going to accept the consequences of using deadly force, USE IT. Do the same as others are trained, if you are going to shoot, you are doing it to stop a threat. Fire until the threat is gone even if that means reloading. Shooting only once (unless the homeowner didn't have enough time shoot more) unless a "lucky" or really well aimed shot will not put someone down. Unless you seriously damage the central nervous system the body can keep going. According to FBI studies people react differently from being shot, some fall down from non-mortal wounds, this is a psychological effect of "holywood" where the person finds out they have been shot and their mind is convinced they cannot go on. However, the study also found there are as many people who will continue on, even if they have a mortal wound like an injured heart or major artery that will bleed them out. This includes individuals that are raged with anger or under the influence of something (alcohol, drugs, etc). Their conclusion was to shoot until the threat was removed. Either the person was on the ground (if they were advancing), disarmed, or no longer to use any weapon (such as missing a head). |
