Bank teller foils holdup, nabs suspect — loses job

Jim Nicholson knew he should have just handed over the cash.

But when the thin man in a beanie cap, dark clothing and sunglasses pushed a black backpack across the bank counter and demanded money, Nicholson says his instincts took over.

After more than two years working as a teller at the Key Bank branch in Lower Queen Anne, Nicholson clearly understood the bank's strict policy of quickly complying with robbers' demands and avoiding confrontation.

Instead, Nicholson threw the bag to the floor, lunged toward the robber and demanded to see a weapon. Surprised, the would-be bank robber backed up and then bolted for the door, with Nicholson on his heels.

Nicholson, 30, chased the man for several blocks before knocking him to the ground with the help of a passer-by. Nicholson then held him until police arrived.

That was Tuesday.

On Thursday, Nicholson was fired.

He was fired to send a message to other tellers: "We at Key Bank would rather lose a few thousand dollars than pay millions in a settlement with your relatives. Do not resist!"

To be honnest i can see the logic in why he was fired.

He ignored policy, policy that is designed to protect not just his own life, but the lives of other people in the bank, customers, staff and the family of bank staff.

Somebody who cannot understand and abide by policy without turning into a have a go hero is probably somebody who should not be employed in a bank.

Its not the fact that this turned out well and the robber did not have a gun, its the fact that this could have ended up with three or four people seriously injured or dead because of one persons misplaced bravery over money that is insured anyway.

The police and swat teams are trained for this kind of shit, let them do it, but then again the police do a shitty job nowadays anyway, so i can see why this guy might of tried to help.

People who stand up for themselves are a threat.

It is not surprise about the outcome!

Sheep are to be led to the slaughter, not to think & rebell!!

Plenty of sheep being led to the slaughter here.

But don't worry about the banksters, there's light at the end of the tunnel for them.

Actually, we know a clerk at a grocery store who chased a thief. He is now a quadraplegic. This policy is standard practice now. Don't be a hero. Its about keeping your employees from getting hurt, as is often the case when one tries to be hero, for chump change.

This is because the banks can make more through insurance fraud than by stopping the 'robbery'.
