Back in my day, it was under 40 below zero with 8 feet of snow. You call THAT winter? Back in my day the snow was piled up to the lines on the electric poles and we had to place cake pans of lighted charcoal under our cars hours before we could start them. |

I worry that the power will be out for an extended time, and we will have to sleep in them inside the house to keep warm. I also have a tent that will go up in the living room and we could sleep in our bags inside of it to controll heat loss and prevent drafts. I am thinking of heating a very small space like a single room with a ceramic heater. It would make sense to plan on organizing your living plan for a small space ahead of time just in case. |

I saw my first wooly bear a couple of weeks ago, way to early in the season for them. It was pure black, not a good sign. vaccinefreehealth.blogspot.com The risk far outweighs any benefit as the risk will vary from child to child. |

Back in my day, it was under 40 below zero with 8 feet of snow. I had a few days of -43 and snow deep with high winds last winter. I HOPE it does not get worse. Winters suck. South Dakota area btw. I enjoyed the nice winter years before last. |
mercury2 User ID: 704238 ![]() 08/06/2009 11:04 AM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have a stash of stuff for a power outage too, like a cashmere sweater dress that is kind of like a long sweatshirt - I could live in that, it would be cozy. The idea of pitching a tent in the room is a good one too. Last winter I used one of those electric panel heaters in my tiny apartment (Econo-Heater) and supplemented it with the baseboards when I needed to. Even though it was colder this winter than last winter by quite a margin, my heat bill did not go up, the Econo-Heater saved me money. It probably paid for itself over the season. The baseboards are evil for sure, this panel heater is much better. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 708377 ![]() 08/06/2009 11:24 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Remember the inauguration, many people made comments on how certain people didn't seem cold at all. They had on battery operated warming socks and gloves. They likely even had on a warming vest. These products are not that expensive. I found 40 below socks on Amazon for less than 8 bucks. The battery operated ones would only last for as long as the battery, but these socks would be great for daily warmth around the house. |

malu User ID: 593162 ![]() 08/06/2009 11:59 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | well the upside to a cold winter is, it keeps the less hardy out, just getting through every day life is a major pain in the ass unfortunately, they kind of have you by the balls, if they cut off utilities, i suspect 90% would not survive more than a couple of weeks i have been thinking about the tent in the house trick too, with sub zero sleeping bags. Winter looks like summer, and is only about 15 degrees cooler compared to summer! Snow is a distant thought that'll always be confined to our dreams. The commercial portrayal of a white Christmas is like a slap in the face to people who've lived their entire lives where I live... |
