Basic action of the Mossberg is fine, but I don't like the plastic trigger guard or safety.

Get the Remington 870 Express pump - no frills, basic wood, beadblasted finish.

I know what you mean but then again, I've never seen a broken trigger guard or safety on a Mossberg. And like I said way back at the beginning of this thread, if it's strictly for HD, get a shorter barrel at least.

Me neither, but I'm old school - some things just should not be made of plastic.

As for the barrels, I've always been a proponent of a 2-barrel setup for the one-gun man. Get the fully-rifled barrel with a cantilever scope mount for long-range (75 to 200 yards) and a smoothbore Remchoke barrel. For most situations the modified choke will be just fine, and a rifled tube can be added for close-in slug work.

I guess a one barrel setup is possible with the tubes too, if you can figure out how to mount a pistol scope on a ventilated rib barrel with quick-detach rings.

Depends on what you're using it for.

I like the Mossberg 500 Field & Deer combo. Great shotgun with interchangeable barrels - a rifled and a smooth bore barrel.

yep then buy an 18 barrel and go tactical, get three for one.

My mossberg doesn't have any plastic, but it is a pain in the ass to strip down.

200 yards with a sabot slug and the right barrel? yep

that is pushing it though

i have been looking for a sabotted .30 cal projectile that is finn stabilized, it would be nice to be able to get out to the 300 yard mark with a shotgun

200 yards is the far end of effective range. However even the military concedes that most combat will occur within that distance.

Sabot rounds would definitely be more effective at longer ranges, but don't discount the utility of plain ol' rifled slugs. And they're much cheaper.

i don't know? but it would sure be marketable if someone could come up with a system to get the range of a 12 gauge out to 3-400 yards accurately, with even a 150 gr projectile

Having worked with Veterans and having worked many city hospitals /trauma I have seen too many die and too many that were young-I am against violence and try hard to abide in that-by outsmarting many-

However, the day may come and I am not one to play with the topic-if it is pulled it will be a mess-

I can say that the torture and the tyranny is starting to seriously agitate many-including pacifists...

However, as ET stated-if it is that bad-a few guns will not save many-compared to an assault team with no qualms on killing-battle hardened and BLOODED-

Fortunately, I believe in something much greater that is beyond-for to win the upcoming battles more will be needed than brass-much more.

Take care flower

Well, shotguns are built for low pressure cartridges...I don't think you could push a light bullet like that fast enough to remain stable that far out. I think you'd have more success with a big .45 or 50 cal slug.

But, you can get a poly-choke that screws in to a remchoke-equipped barrel!

Can you elaborate? I'm still a little puzzled about why you think you need the poly-choke. On the intimidation factor, I'd be no more intimidated by a poly-choke on a barrel than a plain barrel. As for the quick-change factor, I can't think of a case where I'd be wanting to play with choke settings in the middle of a battle.

But, I recognize the utility of being able to switch from a smooth tube to a rifled tube when necessary.

My dad had one installed on his Savage (A5 knockoff) back in the '60s and the utility of being able to change choke settings quickly, got my attention. Plus I consider that profile with the (original, not vent'd) P-C installed somehow "Howitzer-looking". Plus, you can in fact go with rifled slugs since they have a Slug setting. Bottom line is sentimental reasons and with a P-C on a 21" barrel with rifle sights, I'm set for birds, bunnies, big-game, and bad guys.

Shotty is not great for home defense, to loud, bulky as fuck, heavy and extremely dangerous to EVERYONE.

Get something smaller, [link to en.wikipedia.org]

Shit will put the victim down without much of a mess. Don't expect them to be breathing if shot in the chest, headshots are instant kill, never heard of anyone surviving a .45 to the dome. Its small enough to allow you to be able to maneuver quickly.

Taurus Judge 45/410. Handgun

Shoots 410 or 45 long colt. shoot them in the face with #6 to blind them and then follow that with either buckshots or a couple of 45 lc hollow points.

Much less bulky than a shot gun. Wide dispersion at close range too. Got one right by the bed. #6 in the face would ruin your day (if it didn't kill you). 45 lc is a proven manstopper.

They did a study years back and determined that the sound of a pump shotgun behind a door was the most freightening sound you can make to scare off an intruder.

You can be out of cartridges and it still does the trick.

Also saves having to replace the door or patch a hole in the wall to fix warning shots.
