In order to qualify for the program you had to have already been collecting welfare and food stamps. Once you qualified you received $200 for each child you had between the age of 3 and 17.

You were not required to buy school supplies with the money. It was just a suggestion. After you got it you were free to spend the money on ANYTHING you wanted.

I was just trying to reinforce that all that money isn't being spent on school supplies.

Who knows what the recipients are spending it on?

Not so much related but..

Home schooling costs around $500 per year per child + some time with your child.

Public school costs around $10,000 per child per year does come with sheep dip.

At least the money went to poor people who needed it. It's better than the rest of it that went to very wealthy bankers. It seems many of you have so much hate in your hearts that you prefer that the rich get it over those who might actually need it.

If they are going to buy school supplies, clothes, or shoes for their kids ; I think that is GREAT!

But by giving them cash there is no way of ensuring that the cash will be spent properly.

And how much of that money went to crack dealers?

You know what? There are millions of WORKING CLASS Americans who would love a school supply handout.

Fuck this socialistic bullshit. Why are people with school aged children even on welfare?

My point is that everyones anger in this thread seems to be misplaced. Who can blame them for taking the money, is there anyone here who would refuse it if they were offered it? Instead of getting angry at the poor people and insinuating they are wasting it on crack, why not get pissed at the ones who are stealing your money and giving it to others?

What a waste. That money could have been spent on two cruise missiles that would have been used to mrder at least 10,000 innocent children.

What a waste. Sarcasim.

I don't know about New York.

but my state (Missouri) just had a tax free weekend for school supplies. I think this is a great idea.

I think the point of this is to get the school children the proper supplies so they can learn to fend for themselves and not on the government and taxpayers for the livelihood.

I for one am in favor of giving schoolchildren every opportunity to have a chance to learn, so that in the future they are reliant on themselves.

Instead of cash, they should be given coupons or vouchers for school supplies to ensure that the money is going towards the purchase of school supplies and that the program isn't being abused.

It just goes to show that they do not care where the taxpayer $$ goes, as long as it gets burned up in the economy in order to delay the inevitable a tad bit longer.

the money should have gone to the school for supplies and have the kids pick up the supplies at the school thereby reducing the chance for fraud and mismanagement
