Thermite is used along with high explosives to melt steel columns, and the fact that it was found in the dust means someone had to plant the demolition explosives in advance. The type found was a Department of Defense product.

WTC 7 had no jet fuel fires or thermite (it was too heavy for Giuliani to carry to his office, LOL), yet it collapsed at free fall speed AFTER the small fires had mostly burned themselves out. Police/firefighters warned people to get away from it as they had been told it would collapse. It was "pulled" by demolotion charges set prior to the "attacks".

You CAN heat steel with jet fuel to critical temperatures, but ONLY in a controlled enviroment where oxygen flow and fuel air mixtures are kept to an optimum level.
Just pouring some jet fuel into the side of a steel building woul little more than lighting your BBque pit with lighter fluid. While you CAN melt the BBq pit with starting fluid, you CANNOT do it without a sophisticated apparatus for doing so. You can pour two gallons of gas on your bbqpit and it wont get hot enough to dmamge it.
