You truly haven't a grasp of anything Hindu. First there is no such word in Sanskrit, the word is foreign from invaders. There is no such thing as a hindu. The indiginous religions were multiple and not all equal. Demigod worship and Visnu worship are not the same. Even amoung the Demigods there is a hierarchy of prominant and lessor. Mother Kali whom receive flesh as an offering is not equal in result nor destination to say Lord Shiva or Lord Brahma, who both only accept Visnu prasadam. Even those two greatest of Guna Avatars are not same same. One is conducting the mode of ignorance(and actually Lord Visnu, just as milk transformed into yogurt is still milk) and the other is conducting the mode of passion. Just as Lord Visnu is conducting the mode of goodness. So much differences, you haven't scratched the surface.

The dasavatars are a poor place to start, start with Mahabharata by Ganguli and then Bhagavad-Gits by Swami Prabhupada only. Prabhupadabooks.com has all the unchanged books on line to read. Bhagavad-gita must be understood through a bhakta and not an impersonalist
