WTF? - Sarin Gas found in the air - Chinese-North Korean border area
China has detected deadly nerve gas at its border with North Korea and suspects an accidental release inside the secretive state, a Japanese news report said Friday. The Chinese military is strengthening its surveillance activities after detecting the highly virulent sarin gas in November last year and in February in Liaoning province, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported, citing anonymous sources from the Chinese military. Sarin gas, which was developed in Germany before World War I, was used in the deadly 1995 nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway by a doomsday cult. The Chinese special operations forces found 0.015-0.03 microgrammes of the gas per cubic metre when they were conducting regular surveys while there were winds from the direction of North Korea, the report said. China suspects that there were some experiments or accidents in its neighbouring country, it said.

5,000 metric tons would qualify ??

It was not the first time they detected gas according to this:

[link to www.globalsecuritynewswire.org]

China twice in the last year has detected trace amounts of sarin nerve agent at its border with North Korea, Agence France-Presse reported yesterday (see GSN, March 7, 2006).

While carrying out standard checks, Chinese military personnel in November and in February detected 0.015-0.03 micrograms per cubic meter of the chemical warfare material in Liaoning province, according to a report by Asahi Shimbun that cited anonymous Chinese military officials.

Beijing speculated that the gas resulted from an accident or an experiment conducted by North Korea, which is thought to hold up to 5,000 metric tons of chemical weapons.

The incidents have led China to step up monitoring, according to the newspaper report (Agence France-Presse/Google News, Oct. 8).

How about this:

North Korea can unleash 13 types of biological agent, South Korea says

[link to www.timesonline.co.uk]

From The Times
October 6, 2009
Richard Lloyd Parry in Pyongyang

North Korea’s armed forces are capable of carrying out 13 kinds of viral and bacterial attack, the South Korean Government said yesterday in one of the most detailed assessments of the dictatorship’s biological weapons arsenal.

In a submission to the South Korean National Assembly, the Defence Minister also said that the North had 5,000 tonnes of chemical weapons, believed to include mustard gas, phosgene and sarin. Among its biological agents are cholera, yellow fever, smallpox, typhus, typhoid fever and dysentery.

Despite the alarming assessment, Kim Tae Young also said that his country’s armed forces had the capacity pre-emptively to destroy about a hundred sites connected to the North’s nuclear programme in the event of an imminent attack.

“We have a complete list of them,” Mr Kim said, adding that the North Korean military may not have achieved the technological breakthroughs necessary to attach nuclear warheads to a missile delivery system or launch them from a bomber.

“It is not clear whether North Korea has nuclear arms,” he said. “But we have sufficient information on the locations where items related to the nuclear programme are stored and where the delivery means are placed.”

It is known that North Korea’s 1.2 million-man armed forces possess significant chemical and biological weapons, but the details announced yesterday emphasise the hardline approach to its neighbour taken by the South Korean Government under the President, Lee Myung Bak.

Yesterday’s statements came as North Korea was pressed from other quarters, including China, whose Prime Minister, Wen Jiabao, is in Pyongyang on a rare three-day visit.

Mr Wen had talks with the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Il, which doubtless included ways of persuading the North to return to the multilateral disarmament talks that it renounced this year.

How people can be exposed to sarin

Following release of sarin into the air, people can be exposed through skin contact or eye contact. They can also be exposed by breathing air that contains sarin.

Sarin mixes easily with water, so it could be used to poison water. Following release of sarin into water, people can be exposed by touching or drinking water that contains sarin.

Following contamination of food with sarin, people can be exposed by eating the contaminated food.

A person’s clothing can release sarin for about 30 minutes after it has come in contact with sarin vapor, which can lead to exposure of other people.

Because sarin breaks down slowly in the body, people who are repeatedly exposed to sarin may suffer more harmful health effects.

Because sarin vapor is heavier than air, it will sink to low-lying areas and create a greater exposure hazard there.

That's what I was thinking, it's back in Nov. and Feb., so why are they just now announcing it? Are they gearing up for confrontation or are they trying to incite another power (cough...USA...cough) to take on this battle? Our leaders have been frothing about N. Korea, for years now, so is this like a signal for go?
