We're getting our first whiteout blizzard of the season NOW
When I got up this morning it was only 29 degrees out and windy as hell. In the last hour the snow started coming and has gotten heavier with the wind creating whiteout conditions. In no time at all, everything has become covered in a thin white blanket of snow. With a bit of luck, we'll be out sledding in no time. Yeehaa, no more black flies, mosquitoes, gravel dust or potholes in the road till next spring. (The potholes fill in nicely with snow and ice and in the winter we can do 80 mph on our gravel road)
I AM CANADIAN and I'm about 8 hours north of Buffalo, NY. and I LOVE WINTER!

It was 100 years ago. Today, most of the lakes in the near north are dead or close to it because of acid rain. Anyway, the wilderness is still there (somewhat) so we can be thankful for that at least.

Since INCO raised and cleaned up the stacks in Sudbury, things are going much better. Sudbury is starting to grow trees and the lakes are coming back. There are fish in lakes now that were dead 10 years ago. We have no problem with acid lakes in our area at all.
We were driving to a neighbour's farm to get our chickens and turkeys yesterday and saw 3 moose in the field beside the road; a big bull and two cows. We stopped the truck to watch them graze for a while and along came a pickup truck with 3 American hunters in it, stopped the truck, got out, levelled the rifles and down went the bull and one cow, right in front of our eyes. The bull was a clean kill, but the cow had her shoulder chipped by the first shot (lousy aim) and the lunatic was running across the field while cracking off more shots at the poor thing instead of just taking a clean kill shot. It eventually died. So I asked them if they know the farmer who owns that property and they didn't, so I told them that for a nice moose roast, I'll keep my mouth shut. We'll see if my roast shows up today.

That's because Elliot Lake has been classified as a retirement community and they know that the old folks deserve warmer, sunnier weather. It's always nice in Elliot Lake ;)

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 791530

NONE - that's the only problem. If you have to earn money, this is not the place to come. Our main industries are logging and mining and the softwood lumber dispute with the U.S. wiped out a lot of our loggers, who are still struggling to pay off $500,000.00 pieces of equipment that they couldn't earn money with.
We moved up here over 4 years ago and I've managed to find about 6 months of work in total. I get replies like I'm too old (55 yrs.) and I'm way too over qualified (because I have diverse experiences on my resume), but I found out what's really going on around here. If you're not related to somebody or from one of the pioneering families, you ain't gettin' a job, period. I was one of a couple of qualified heavy equipment operators who applied at the local township for a job and the only person who got an interview was the stock boy at the local grocery store (who had never even sat on a piece of heavy equipment) because he was somebody's nephew. The rest of us with qualifications and certifications were "unsuitable" for a interview.
We live very meagerly and don't strive for material acquisitions, so a poor lifestyle is okay with us. We live in a tamarack (larch) log house and heat with our wood stove. I'll be trying to go off grid in two years.

I'm an OLD Canadian who grew up with F and MPH and as I got older and Canada changed, I also learned the metric system, but since so many posters are American, I try to keep it simple for them. You see, intelligent Canadians have the ability to do these conversions in their heads, while Americans don't have a clue how many F degrees -2C is or how fast 130kph is, so I try to take it easy on them and not place too many expectations on their limited education. Christ, I'm grateful when Americans don't think we live in igloos and eat raw fish.
One of my favourite shows is "Rick Mercer Talks To Americans" because it really shows how incredibly stupid they are, including university profs and politicians, which are supposed to be the cream of the education system in the U.S.
That's why.
P.S. It takes me so long to answer because we only get dialup internet out here in paradise.

Don't get me started on sudbury (little toronto:)! I agree that the lakes are doing much better than the 70's - 90's but I've talked to a few old-timers and they talk about what the north was like when they were young - The fishing was amazing back then! That's not to say that there aren't any hot spots left. Anyway, I hope man can clean up his act before we end up in a situation where the destruction of nature becomes irrversible... that would be a sad day indeed.

What you said about the Americans chasing the cow and shooting it as they across the feild... that's NOT paradise, that's "Apocalypse now" and the "deer hunter" sequel.

sorry

cheers

That sad day happened years ago, my friend. We have already trashed the environment beyond any hope of repair and the countdown is on. Species are becoming extinct in record numbers, extreme weather records are the norm rather than the exception, the Amazon rainforest is almost completely destroyed (thanks to Rockefeller, read the book "Thy Will Be Done", which describes how Rockefeller hired mercenaries to kill everyone in the villages of the Amazon for $35.00 a village before lumbering the area), the polar caps are melting and the ocean levels are rising threatening countries like The Netherlands and England, the cod stocks are depleted and the Pacific ocean has a black section of death in the middle of it. I'm afraid that sad day happened already and all we can do is take care of our little, tiny part of the planet to our best abilities. At least that's what I'm doing with my 80 acres. (I know acres is Imperial, but we really don't use hectares for farm land that was divided into 160 acre sections.)

I've been up in elliot lake for just over 3 years. the job situation is pretty much as you described it. I repair & build puters for a living and I'm blessed with a lot of retirees who need tutoring in how to turn on their puters & stuff - Certainly not getting rich at it by any means. We live in a quiet low rise building and the rent is cheap (less than $500 for a large 3 bed.) and our hydro/heat is included. I personally don't care much for the town its self but the surrounding area is nice once you go up pass the old mines... bout a 30 Min. drive.

Are your horses for riding or working? Our neighbour does horse logging and has a few beautiful big Canadians and a Percheron to pull trees with. The rest of our neighbours just have riding horses that don't seem to get ridden.

Yeah, I'm pretty much speaking of where we live too. The world's condition is pretty much on life support at this juncture but there's some things we can't do much about so it's not much use in complaining about it... but yeah, even the oceans are becoming dead zones. Friggin' depressing if you think about it too much.

Yes, "sassy" was my dog's name.

I came up from Toronto after living there for 37 years. I spent 10 years in Newfoundland where I grew up. We were very fortunate to get out of the city and I know exactly what you're talking about with the noise and stuff. Life is far from perfect now but a hell of a lot better than it was 3 years ago.
