I have seen similar events and the trauma sticks with you. Certain smells will bring that feeling back in the future, and it's quite uncomfortable. The only way to really deal with it, is to recognize that you had nothing to do with what happened to them. Once that finally gets into your mind and you accept it, is the day you begin to really heal.
