I have a long family history in this. Don't listen to the other answers. People like to guess, but the secrets are so sacred, no one tells. I've never sworn to secrecy though ....

People percieve them as "evil". This is simplistic.

Essentially they know of greater powers beyond this Earth. They know how to use these powers. They keep them secret so they can rule the world.
