The hole, was supposedly dug by hand and carefully made to look like a meteorite crater, so much so that the so called experts initially identified it as a meteorite crater.
Anybody who believes it is a hoax also believes that crop circles are created by a bunch of drunks with a 2"x4" and some rope.

By the way, for you self proclaimed experts in the field of meteorites and their properties, you know who you are, what's the difference between a meteorite and a fireball?

Swedish evening newspaper Aftonbladet reports that it was a hoax by swedish telephone company Tele2. It was a publicity stunt.

Latvian UFO revealed to be PR trick

A mysterious UFO that allegedly fell over Latvia on Sunday has turned out to be a fake. A local mobile operator has confessed to being involved in staging a hoax with the meteorite.

“The Mazsalaca meteorite was the initiative of Tele2,” Jаnis Sprogis, the company’s marketing director, said during a news conference on Monday. The aim of the hoax, he said, was to make the Latvian population believe in themselves and discover that just one unique and interesting story is enough to make Latvia the centre of attention both in the region and the world.

However, Sprogis promised to compensate the state for its losses, which reportedly amount to $4,000.

Earlier, the country’s Interior Minister, Linda Murniece, called the incident a mockery that took advantage of the public and special services. She said she believes those guilty of staging such “nasty jokes” must be punished.

"If it is proven that someone did stage a hoax this way, they will have to pay a big price, as this incident involved the police, rescuers, scientists, numerous other agencies and costly equipment," she said.

However, Murniece said, it’s for police to decide whether or not a criminal case should be launched.

The unidentified object ostensibly fell on a farm field near the northwest Latvian town of Mazsalaca. The incident drew huge public and media attention. Scientists, sensation seekers and special forces were working hard to explain what caused a mysterious crater measuring 20 meters wide and 5 meters deep that appeared in the area.

A local resident filmed what he called the consequences of a powerful blast. This video later became one of the most popular on the Internet.

Fire fighters and police worked at the scene, where the crater was first believed to be the result of a meteor strike.

Later the owner of the property reportedly started taking money from people who wanted to see the object up close – $2 for the ticket.

Some experts, however, did view the incident with skepticism and quickly labeled it a publicity stunt. They claimed the hole was dug with spades and aluminum powder was placed at the crater's base.

For almost twenty four hours the world was hypnotized by the story that seemed to fall out of the sky. Meanwhile, as one of Moscow's top scientists suggests, the idea of a meteorite hitting Earth isn't as far fetched as you might believe.

That shit doesn't make any sense no matter which way you look at it.
They are trying to get the Latvian people to believe in themselves by perpetrating a hoax which if proven to be a hoax will only serve to make Latvia a laughing stock.

You know what i think, i think that this is real and that they want to put the lit on it, why because something is coming our way its not the first that has been sighted also above my country the netherlands there was one last week was on the news and many people saw it also i remember last month another one near brazil etc etc bit many if you ask me, so why cover this up well if scientists get their hands on it they might discover the origin of this meteor simple as that. dont believe directly what the government says right away. always keep an open mind until you have been at the spot and have filmed or touched or felt it with your own eyes, my question is why have they not also filmed during the day simple.

No one was injured after a meteorite fell near a small town in northern Latvia on Sunday, local Latvian media reported. According to media reports, the meteorite fell near a residential house on the outskirts of Mazsalaca town in the Valmiera district of Latvia, leaving a crater of some 20 meters (66 feet) in diameter and 10 meters (33 feet) deep.


A spokesperson for the Latvian State Fire and Rescue Service said that rescuers and soldiers immediately cordoned off the territory, however, it is still not clear whether it was an asteroid or a space satellite. "The territory has been immediately cordoned off as we still do not know what fell down from the sky.


According to preliminary information, it was a meteorite. However, it is possible that it was a [space] satellite or its fragment. A radioactive contamination is also possible," she said. A witness, who saw the object falling from the sky and leaving a burning trace behind, said it was making a noise similar to the one of an aircraft flying at a low altitude

Baffled officials say a fiery object was spotted plummeting from space at high speed in Latvia last night. The mystery 'meteor' smashed a 50-foot wide and 16-foot deep hole in a field next to a farm in the north of the Baltic country. Stunned locals managed to video the object smouldering at the bottom of the crater.


Military chemical units quickly raced to the scene to monitor the field for abnormal radiation levels. Fire service spokeswoman Inga Vetere said police have cordoned off the area and are waiting for geologists from the university of Latvia to arrive and analyse the object. Uldis Nulle, a scientist at the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center, said there was smoke coming out of the crater when he arrived at the crash site late Sunday in the Mazsalaca region near the Estonian border. "My first impression is that, yes, it was a meteorite. "All the evidence suggests this when compared to pictures of real meteorite craters." He said the rim of the crater was slightly raised and there was a black-grayish scar at the bottom - both signs of a meteorite impact. Experts outside Latvia said it was unusual for such a large meteorite to hit the Earth. The planet is constantly bombarded with objects from outer space, but most burn up in the atmosphere and never reach the surface. In 2007, a meteorite crashed near Lake Titicaca in Peru, causing a crater about 40 feet (12 meters) wide and 15 feet (5 meters) deep.
