Piyush Jindal was born on June 10, 1971, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Agarwal Indian immigrants Amar and Raj Jindal, who had recently arrived for Amar to attend graduate school at Louisiana State University.[1] His father, Amar, left Punjab in India and his ancestral family village of Khanpura, Malerkotla in 1970. Amar was the first person in Jindal's paternal family to attend school past the fifth grade and to graduate from high school. [5] Amar has a degree in civil engineering.[6] His mother, Raj, is an information technology director for the Louisiana Department of Labor and served as assistant secretary to former state labor secretary Garey Forster during the administration of Governor Murphy J. "Mike" Foster, Jr.[7]
