lucid dreaming helps. it's a good "square one" for those without any experience being semi-conscious in the dream state. i started simply with light-switches... a trigger i conditioned my waking mind with so that in the dream world, i might be triggered. it works.

for some reason, it seems to be true that light-switches do not work in a dream. i have experienced this and so have others. what i did in the beginning was, in my waking life, test switches. i would think, is this real, or a dream? (even if i knew it was real) and i would flip on a switch. if the light came on, i was assured. but i always allowed myself a moment of question, no matter how absurd it may be.

i kept doing this, day after day, every time i noticed a light switch. i would give myself a moment of question, and test it. the results of constantly questioning my reality didduh into my dream life, and there came a time that in a dream, i noticed a light switch. i flicked it on, and nothing happened. realizing you are dreaming is the first step. triggers can help.

in a lucid dream you can fly around, control the dream, etc. astral is different.

think of your body. about a centimeter out from your skin lies an aura- the aura many see and report and have studied, is your astral body.

every night when you go to sleep, your body naturally projects your astral body, and the two are linked forever, no matter where you go. some say our projections into the dream world, connecting to our body, is the sole reason for sleep. this is why many who constantly project seem to wake up just as tired, if not more so, when they wake.. the energy you cultivate rawly in the astral realm is what recharges your body. if you are constantly projecting, moving, aware of the situation, the energy can not flow as freely and is used more than it is made. this seems to be the only drawback to constant, nightly projections. it costs energy when you are recharging.

another point i would like to make is the sensation of projecting. i can tell you later how it can be performed if you are interested, but for now i'd like to throw some things out there i found to be startling at the time, but very normal.

the sensation of pulling out of your body is enough to wake up your body. this is where many get stuck. it is a strange feeling, almost sticky and rubbery, where there is a resistance as the astral pulls out of the physical body. it took me a while to get used to it, and i practiced by projecting an arm out of my body to condition myself to the strange, uncomfortable sensation.

another sensation that startles people is the sound. it's a very intense ringing and buzzing in your head that we are normally quite unaware of as we drift off to sleep.. i've heard many explanations but from what i can gather, it's just tapping into a higher frequency to allow the astral body enough control to project.

more later if you're interested...

In response to AC 786296 saying the astral is an emotional world... hell yeah! It is like you become an empathic spirit. You can feel emotions and feelings radiating out from entities and places you come across.

Re: So has anyone here REALLY done astral travel?
You have no idea what you're talking about, AT ALL. Just because a person becomes nonphysically focused does not mean they are suddenly immune from all danger. There are nonphysical nasties just like there are physical nasties. You're going to get people hurt by telling them this garbage.

What exactly can they do to harm you?

They do not harm you physically. I'll give some examples of what these negative entities can do. But remember this, they do not respect 'free will'. Positive entities do. You can ask for guidance, help and protection from positive entities or your higher self (or Buddha, Jesus, etc.), but positive entities respect free will and will not interfere with your spiritual growth unless they are asked.

But negative entities understand what scares you and they will attempt to use your fears to scare you off the path of spiritual development. As a spiritual being, you have to conquer these fears to continue on the path.

Example: Every time you try to astral project, you barely get out of your body before a 'night terror' comes into the room and scares the hell out of you. A night terror can be just a menacing shadow form. It scares the hell out of you because it can radiate a fear that you are very receptive to. So, instead of facing this entity and standing your ground, you decide that this OBE stuff isn't all that fun and decide not to try it anymore. The negative entity (night terror) has done its job and steered you off the path of spiritual growth.

But lets say you face the night terror without letting the immense fear pull you back into your body. You realize that it cannot harm you, it can only use your fears as a tool against you. So you confront it and tell it to get the f%!k away from you, that it cannot harm you, and that it has no control over you. Guess what!? It goes away. You learn a powerful lesson and realize the only thing that is holding you back is your own fear!

So it simply comes down to a show of force? Eliminate fear and you enliminate negative thought? You eliminate evil forces that can hurt you in this realem and others? You ACTUALLY fight these demons and WIN? You are REQUIRED to fight evil or pay? This seems to be a underlining recurrent theme in MANY aspects for many subjects...
Things that make you go hmmm....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 762208

No. It is not a show of force. And no, you do not 'fight' demons and you are not REQUIRED to fight evil or pay.

All you are doing when confronting frightening situations is recognizing that you do not have to let fear rule you. This is the same thing you should try to accomplish in your physical life. Ego and fear go hand in hand and they are your restrictions. They are your chains. You are not fighting demons, you are merely confronting your own fears that the ego has trapped within you for so long.

You are 'cleansing' yourself by dying on to self and rediscovering that you are a sovereign being. The only real fight is you fighting your ego and the fear it has placed within you. It is a shattering of the illusion that physical reality has chained you in.

Re: So has anyone here REALLY done astral travel?
also, i would like to say, fear is a very important subject in the process of learning, beginning, or even just studying astral projection.

think of projecting out of your body and turning around to see yourself lying there, asleep. it is truly a remarkable and reality-shattering event that can only be likened to death, given our limited knowledge of these things.

astral projection can only be successful if you overcome your fear of death, because if you fear death this moment of separation will frighten you. if you keep pushing ahead, with faith in god and your natural ability to project, you will conquer this fear in an intimate way. it may be scary. it may not be pleasant at times. you may even be so shaken you stop projecting on purpose.

it will always be your choice how far down the rabbit hole you venture. it is up to you to personally experience it, and discern for yourself what is safe and what is not. good luck. no one ever said it would be easy.

Please don't.

Demons can act on the soulplane, just as they can act on the physical plane.

Travelling within the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ is your only protection.

Spiritual battles are made manifest on the soulplane.

Yes, I agree. I've heard the voice of the Lord in a spiritual battle I was in, either Jesus or a warring angel. His voice was the scariest voice I have ever heard in my life, if you would be on the negative receiving end that is. His voice sounded like a cross between thunder and a whooshing sound and a little electronic vibe to it also. Very weird voice, not like a human voice at all. I always think about that voice and how authoritative it was.

Once, when I was coming back to my body to wake up, the Lord let me see this demon standing by my bed. It looked almost exactly like the Ringwraiths of Lord of the Rings. So yeah, this stuff is real and not to be taken lightly.

Glad to hear your interest. I think every person should explore this.

A couple books I would recommend that would tell you far more than a website is Robert Monroe's 3 books, Robert Bruce's 'Astral Dynamics', and Stephen LeBarge's books on Lucid Dreaming. But always keep an open mind in what you learn, because quite often you will experience things contrary to what you read. Why? Because every experience is unique and is individual. There is some foundational information that seems to be universal (vibrations for example), but much of the experiences you will have are experiences that your spirit is in need of for spiritual growth. They are very much 'personalized', though at the time of experiencing them, you will not understand it.

Write down every experience, even vivid and lucid dreams. It is all connected and when you are far down the path, you will begin to see the connection to our physical world as well.

i am going to tell you what i did. but first of all, do note, this is how i have found myself able to project, and you may have your own issues to problem solve. however i will do my best to relate my own problems with projecting and what i did to be successful.

i would also like to briefly say, if you are still interested after this, please research all sources you can find on astral projection and the astral realm. there are many opinions. some people have dedicated their entire lives to projecting and recording each experience. some shamans base their entire livlihood to projections and out-of-this-world missionary work. (not in the sense of spreading religion, but to gain truth and knowledge and bring it back to earth with them.)

but with every story, every account, listen to your heart. god will tell you when something is true, because it "rings true". it resonates in a way only god can touch your heart, and these realizations and moments of a gentle nudges from god are the most important discerning factor when faced with "new age" topics, which i believe to be very much true in some ways, and very much propaganda and disinformation in others.

after a while i began to lucid dream regularly, and without any effort. it would just happen randomly, and i would take the opportunity to explore and experience this sense of control over the "matter" of your dreams. one friend told me as a child he would rewind dreams when he made mistakes- controlling time in dreams. though i use the world "control" with a bit of hesitance, because it's not necessarily that you are playing god's part, you are being REACTED TO. your intentions are obliged, not law of the land. this is the difference, and i am disheartened to see people declare lucid dreams and projecting as playing god- it could not be further from the truth.

here is a good way to practice... first of all, getting into the state of mind of projection is a difficult thing to grasp, until you begin to try for yourself and understand what all this is about and means.

lie in bed alone at night, lock your door. no music or distruptions or sounds. as quiet and isloated at possible, so that there are no distractions. normally your body would begin to drift off to sleep with your mind, and you will forget where you are and begin to dream, whether you remember it or not.

here is where the difference between a dream and astral projection lies. while you are relaxing deeper and deeper, and your body begins to drift "away" from you, you must stay conscious. some meditate, but it may be too easy to fall asleep for those who are not heavy-weight meditators.

encountering this problem, i began to envision a candle- something that i can think of to keep my mind active, but no words or thoughts will wake up my body and reconnect the physical and my consciousness. the trick is to not become mentally stimulated or excited- which can deem daunting when your entire body goes numb from you.

actually at first i would wake up my body because i thought i was lying down wrong- cutting off circulation and letting my arms or legs go numb. i soon realized this was a sensation i would have to grow accustomed to. it's just the first step in separation of body and astral body. your body gets more and more numb to you, you cannot feel your arms or fingers or legs or head or anything.

if you continue to remain conscious, yet relaxed and calm, you can begin experimenting with the sensation of slowly projecting a finger, an arm, a leg. this is tricky. i progressed slowly because i am a cautious person. learning to move your astral body without moving your physical body is something hard to explain and can only be truly described as the intention of moving this limb, not the actual electrical signal from the brain to the limb.

but it happens so naturally to us when we do not try. once i was in the process of waking up, and i reached up to scratch my nose, only to open my eyes and see that my arm had not moved at all.

so one night, frustrated with my experiences being difficult and then having breakthroughs, only to keep trying, i ask god for help. i asked him to show me what it was like, if he thought i was ready. i closed my eyes and, like many resources say, after my body had gone numb and began to drift to sleep, willed my astral body to another area in my bedroom. you think, "door, now." it sounds odd, but this clear intention is much stronger than trying to force your astral body out.

all of a sudden my ears were buzzing, VERY loudly, like a very high frequency blaring in my head. i started to feel my two bodies begin to pull against each other- imagine you have a body inside yours, and it is rising up out of it. it is VERY odd and scared the poo out of me. i quickly woke myself up flailing on my bed, and my heart was pounding. i felt bad that i didn't succeed, but it was definitely a new experience. i researched it some more and found evidence that these sensations were natural and expected, and the unknown became known and i gradually lost my fears.

the rest is up to trial and error. i know that's a bad way to end this, but it's true. i read all sorts of documentation and websites and books on the subject, and i still had to "Feel" my way through it. i still had to grasp the concept through experience, not reading. and i expect it's like this for most people. staying conscious while your body is asleep is not an easy idea to concieve of until you just try it yourself. the only thing pushing against you during these first moments is your own fear of what will happen. and then, after this, you are thrust into even bigger unknowns.

fear is truly your only enemy. good luck to all of you, and i hope this sparks enough interest for others to research, if nothing else, and expand their own ideas of what human beings are capable of.

i walk with god every day. he shows me incredible things, astrally and physically. through my astral lessons he shaped me into a fearless person, when i used to be full of fear of everything- heights, demons, death, etc. i have faced these things and come back to tell of it.

the potential of astral lessons is phenomenal- and i am constantly learning and being molded into a soul with integrity, courage, and emotional discipline. it was affected every aspect of my life, and not one angle i can think of has harmed me in any way. the only harm ever brought to me was self-inflicted, and i understand that now.

happy travels...

very true.
similar to your story, once i was lying in bed, not asleep, but relaxed, and god showed me a glimpse of the demons under my bed. they began to crawl out from underneath, hissing, trying to feed into a childlike fear i used to have. i remember the weight shifting on the bed and i astrally projected out of my body, and jumped onto these beings. i was violent, though i am not a violent person. i was enraged at what these beings had done to others. i did not know why i was angry, but it felt like a divine anger i did not call my own but was bestowed through me, as if i were a tool of god. i jumped onto these creatures and began to throttle them, toss them away. i began to chase them, dozens of them turned into thousands, and they were running for their "lives". i felt another presence there with me, and it was god, and we took the form of two wolves, and together we bit into them and slaughtered them, and chased the remaining creatures into the depths of beyond.

i woke up shaking. i am not a hateful or rage-prone person. i deal with my anger logically and peacefully. but in this dream i was overcome with something righteous, something that turned me into a white wolf, something that cast judgment and asked me to carry out what needed to be done. and i remember my jaws crunching bones and black sludge blood splattering. and i remember the glory of god scattering, like someone said earlier, the evil like cockroaches. when i was thrown back into my body, i woke up shaken and it took me a few days to settle this event down in my mind.

god is incredible.

Re: So has anyone here REALLY done astral travel?
Damn it, I am trying to get my head around this and the possible ramifications to what is being said. Could it be true? Can a human really do this? Would we be condemed for trying to achieve god status or is this EVERYBODY'S right and this knowledge has been secreted? You have to admit, there are MANY different schools of thought here. What if i believed the guy that said there is no danger and he was wrong? This seems VERY precarious and not for the faint of heart, the penalty could ne irreversable, no? I don't want to take the chance but for those of you who have taken the risk I must ask, did this provide you with some kind of ephinay? Does it make difference in this life? Did it cement your belief for life after death? Did it give you purpose and pause for everything that you have been taught?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 762208

OP, I wrote before how I no longer willfully "travel", and advised against it. It's very frikken real. I think it's a natural ability of the human being. I've done it since I was a toddler. As I got older, I started reading "occult" writings about it, the methods etc., and found that they correlated to my natural experience of it. The places I've travelled to include what I call The Park (had a nasty experience there, amidst the breathtaking beauty), and a place I call The Academy. (I'd written before that I'd never encountered "entities" while travelling, which is only partially correct: I've encountered many people at The Academy, several on a recurring basis, including a beautiful woman with a lame leg.)

A friend who travels has also been to The Academy, and our descriptions of it correlate remarkably. I've also known people who've gone to The Park without experiencing any negativity, one person seeing a beloved pet dog who'd passed on several years before.

Travelling is a very real phenomenon, a natural function like sex. And like sex, there is the potential for it's misuse. There's also the potential for it's abuse, using it for immoral purposes such as spying upon someone's privacy.

Chances are, you've travelled many times, and woke up thinking you'd simply been dreaming. As the books say, dreams of flying/falling are very often incomplete memories of having travelled.

The only thing I ever got out of my experiences was the intimate knowledge that I am not entirely my body--there's something else that is greater than the physical being, and which relates to the physical being as one might relate to a table or other piece of furniture...it takes care not to destroy it, recognizes it's utility, but once detached from it recognizes that it is of secondary importance. Kinda how we relate to our cars: we don't want them damaged or stolen, but we recognize that the Ford in the driveway is not ourselves.

Re: So has anyone here REALLY done astral travel?
Practice Methods:

Here is how I started out a long, long time ago:

While you're laying there, wait until your body begins to get that numb feeling. Then, play with rocking yourself back and forth; sideways or feet-to-head, doesn't matter. I had almost immediate success with rocking my body back and forth. You can even open your eyes and see that your body is laying stock still while the feeling of rocking is still going on.

After awhile, I practiced seeing myself get off the bed and walk to the door. I imagined every little step and felt exactly how the carpet felt on my bare feet and the coolness of the air and the little marks on the door. Then, I would turn around, walk back to bed and lay back down, watching every little movement. Do this a hundred times; do it whenever you feel motivated. The day comes when you're not even thinking about it and - boom - you're standing at the door looking back at your body. It is not always predictable. After that, you can venture further and further - even traveling up and out of the walls of the house. Go look at the stars. Check out the tree tops. I've always had fun with it.

I've also known people who've gone to The Park without experiencing any negativity, one person seeing a beloved pet dog who'd passed on several years before.

wise words. the astral realm is very real and should be taken very seriously. the ability for others to "mess" with people is also very real. though i will not stop my journey through the veils, because i see those who meddle, and i watch them as they watch others.

think of it as a neighborhood watch program... i do what i can.

I always get confused... when your looking back at your body, are you seeing it with your mind? I've been told i get 'stuck in my body' haha, and my head just can't grasp the concept... Is everything you see during astral projection in your thoughts? I do picture myself walking around a lot and being able to feel everything like it was with my body, but I don't know if I should be seeing it all with my physical eyes or mind. Sorry if I sound dumb lol! ::ph::

you see with your mind when you see with your eyes. what our brains compute to create the reality around us- from that cup to that stove to that dog to that person- is directly filtered through our beliefs of this reality. you do not see that cup because it is there- you see it because you believe it is there.

so really, think of it as seeing with your eyes in a dream, or at school, or when you imagine anyting- is there truly ANY difference?

sorry if i sound vague. the answer sort of lies in a bunch of questions, doesnt it? :)

Re: So has anyone here REALLY done astral travel?
You guys are crazy for messing with astral projection, don't go there, you can unknowingly invite deceptive entities back with you.
