The batch that is being held back was shipped in late October and had the lot number A80CA007A. Approximately 170,000 doses are affected by the recall. Swine Flu Vaccine Linked to Severe Allergic Reactions in Canada"GSK is taking this cautionary action because the Public Health Agency of Canada has received a higher than expected number of reports of anaphylaxis in this lot number compared to other lots," the company explained in a written statement. According to Manitoba health officials, severe allergic reactions result from approximately one in 20,000 injections. However, the standard rate of severe allergic reactions is approximately one in 100,000. According to a November 19 article by the Canadian Press, the reactions have been short-lived and have not caused any permanent injuries. CTV News reported on November 20 that of the 6.6 million doses of the vaccine given so far in Canada, there have been 36 reports of serious adverse reactions. Most of those reactions were allergic reactions that began within moments of the vaccination. However, one Canadian reportedly died from anaphylactic reaction following a vaccination with the H1N1 vaccine. Medical officials have not yet conclusively linked the death to the vaccine. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 825291 ![]() 11/24/2009 12:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to www.vancouversun.com] GENEVA -- An unusual number of severe allergic reactions to swine flu vaccinations have been recorded in Canada, where a batch of the vaccine from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has been recalled, the WHO said on Tuesday. “An unusual number of severe allergies to the vaccine have been detected in Canada,” World Health Organization spokesman Thomas Abraham told AFP. “The Canadian authorities are conducting the appropriate investigations on the vaccines” and “recalled a batch of vaccine from GSK.” “We need to understand what happened in Canada,” he added. GlaxoSmithKline spokeswoman Gwenan White told AFP that the affected doses of its Aprepanrix vaccine had caused reactions to the heart and lungs. Ms. White added that some 172,000 doses are involved, although she declined to reveal how many of those had already been used. GlaxoSmithKline has asked Canadian medical authorities to stop administering vaccines from the affected batch, Ms. White said, adding the company’s investigations were ongoing. WHO spokesman Thomas Abraham said that the WHO had not changed its recommendations regarding swine flu vaccines. Last week, the WHO said checks on many of the 30 deaths recorded following mass pandemic flu vaccinations had so far ruled out a direct link to the vaccines. The fatalities made up a minute fraction of at least 65 million doses of swine flu vaccines which have been administered, said the WHO, citing data from 16 countries. For every 10,000 doses of vaccines administered, only one report of adverse effect had been logged. Of every 100 reports of adverse effects, five are serious cases such as death, the WHO said. More than 6,750 people have died worldwide since the virus appeared in April, according to WHO data. © Copyright (c) National Post |

Pneumonic Plague SymptomsIf the bacteria that cause plague (Yersinia pestis) move to the lungs, symptoms of pneumonic plague usually appear within one to three days. Common signs and symptoms include weakness, fever, headache, and shortness of breath. They usually progress for two to four days and may eventually cause respiratory failure and shock. Even with treatment, symptoms of this disease result in death 75 percent of the time. |

Ernest Berger, head of "Santa America," told NPR radio that the organization's 200 volunteer Father Christmases want to be given the same priority as school teachers and health care workers for getting the H1N1 vaccine. The website of "Santa America," which visits sick and traumatized children in the Christmas season, instructs the men in red to take no chances. "As wonderful as it is, be cautious of children burying their faces in your beard for a hug. If this happens, use sanitizer in your beard," the website advises. "Avoid touching your face, nose, eyes, or mouth. Do not touch children?s faces. If you do, immediately sanitize your hands," the site urges. "Santa should be taking needed vitamins and other doctor approved boosters to keep his immune system at peak performance." |

Soo Lee Wong and her daughter, Angela Truong, both got the H1N1 shot on November 5th. The family says Wong, who had diabetes, started getting sick a day after getting vaccinated and died a few days later. Doctors told the family Wong died of a blood infection. More tests will be done to see if the vaccine played any role. Wong's husband, Thoon Truong, is also caring for his seven-year-old daughter Angela, who has been in the hospital with a fever and swollen, painful legs. He wants to know whether the two cases related to the vaccine or to something else. The province is currently investigating two deaths -- both adults who died within seven days of getting the H1N1 shot. [link to www.ctv.ca] |
