GlaxoSmithKline Recalls H1N1 Vaccine in Canada Over 'Life-Threatening' Allergy Risk
The pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline says it has advised medical staff in Canada to not use one batch of swine flu vaccine for fear it may trigger life-threatening allergies.

GlaxoSmithKline spokeswoman Gwenan White said Tuesday the company issued the advice after reports that one batch of the swine flu vaccine might have caused more allergic reactions than normal.

She says the affected batch contains 172,000 doses of the vaccine. She declined to say how many doses had been administered before the advice to stop using them was given.

White says GlaxoSmithKline wrote to Canadian healthcare professionals advising them to stop using the batch on Nov. 18. She says a total of 7.5 million doses of the vaccine have been distributed in Canada.

Ottawa, ON: GlaxoSmithKline has asked the Canadian government to hold back a batch of H1N1 vaccine that could be linked to a higher rate of severe allergic reactions. The batch that is being held back was shipped in late October and had the lot number A80CA007A. Approximately 170,000 doses are affected by the recall.

Swine Flu Vaccine Linked to Severe Allergic Reactions in Canada"GSK is taking this cautionary action because the Public Health Agency of Canada has received a higher than expected number of reports of anaphylaxis in this lot number compared to other lots," the company explained in a written statement.

According to Manitoba health officials, severe allergic reactions result from approximately one in 20,000 injections. However, the standard rate of severe allergic reactions is approximately one in 100,000.

According to a November 19 article by the Canadian Press, the reactions have been short-lived and have not caused any permanent injuries. CTV News reported on November 20 that of the 6.6 million doses of the vaccine given so far in Canada, there have been 36 reports of serious adverse reactions. Most of those reactions were allergic reactions that began within moments of the vaccination.

However, one Canadian reportedly died from anaphylactic reaction following a vaccination with the H1N1 vaccine. Medical officials have not yet conclusively linked the death to the vaccine.

Severe reactions to swine flu vaccine in Canada: WHO
[link to www.vancouversun.com]

GENEVA -- An unusual number of severe allergic reactions to swine flu vaccinations have been recorded in Canada, where a batch of the vaccine from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has been recalled, the WHO said on Tuesday.

“An unusual number of severe allergies to the vaccine have been detected in Canada,” World Health Organization spokesman Thomas Abraham told AFP.

“The Canadian authorities are conducting the appropriate investigations on the vaccines” and “recalled a batch of vaccine from GSK.”

“We need to understand what happened in Canada,” he added.

GlaxoSmithKline spokeswoman Gwenan White told AFP that the affected doses of its Aprepanrix vaccine had caused reactions to the heart and lungs.

Ms. White added that some 172,000 doses are involved, although she declined to reveal how many of those had already been used.

GlaxoSmithKline has asked Canadian medical authorities to stop administering vaccines from the affected batch, Ms. White said, adding the company’s investigations were ongoing.

WHO spokesman Thomas Abraham said that the WHO had not changed its recommendations regarding swine flu vaccines.

Last week, the WHO said checks on many of the 30 deaths recorded following mass pandemic flu vaccinations had so far ruled out a direct link to the vaccines.

The fatalities made up a minute fraction of at least 65 million doses of swine flu vaccines which have been administered, said the WHO, citing data from 16 countries.

For every 10,000 doses of vaccines administered, only one report of adverse effect had been logged.

Of every 100 reports of adverse effects, five are serious cases such as death, the WHO said.

More than 6,750 people have died worldwide since the virus appeared in April, according to WHO data.

Pneumonic Plague SymptomsIf the bacteria that cause plague (Yersinia pestis) move to the lungs, symptoms of pneumonic plague usually appear within one to three days. Common signs and symptoms include weakness, fever, headache, and shortness of breath. They usually progress for two to four days and may eventually cause respiratory failure and shock. Even with treatment, symptoms of this disease result in death 75 percent of the time.

The avian influenza hemagglutinin binds alpha 2-3 sialic acid receptors while human influenza hemagglutinins bind alpha 2-6 sialic acid receptors.[38] This means that when the H5N1 strain infects humans it will replicate in the lower respiratory tract, and consequently will cause viral pneumonia

Influenza viruses which have undergone antigenic shift have caused the Asian Flu pandemic of 1957, the Hong Kong Flu pandemic of 1968, and the Swine Flu scare of 1976. Until recently, such combinations were believed to have caused the infamous Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918 which killed 40~100 million people worldwide; however more recent research suggests the 1918 pandemic was caused by the antigenic drift of a fully avian virus to a form that could infect humans efficiently.[6][7] One increasingly worrying situation is the possible antigenic shift between avian influenza and human influenza. This antigenic shift could cause the formation of a highly virulent virus.

There's supposed to be a shortage of the vaccine, right, but yet they can turn out enough like 7 million doses? That's enough to hurt alot of ppl, and now they want a recall? Too late, I'd say!

If you can't vaccinate the kids then infect them:
WASHINGTON — US Santas want swine flu vaccine so that sneezing children don't give them an unwelcome present this Christmas.

Ernest Berger, head of "Santa America," told NPR radio that the organization's 200 volunteer Father Christmases want to be given the same priority as school teachers and health care workers for getting the H1N1 vaccine.

The website of "Santa America," which visits sick and traumatized children in the Christmas season, instructs the men in red to take no chances.

"As wonderful as it is, be cautious of children burying their faces in your beard for a hug. If this happens, use sanitizer in your beard," the website advises.

"Avoid touching your face, nose, eyes, or mouth. Do not touch children?s faces. If you do, immediately sanitize your hands," the site urges.

"Santa should be taking needed vitamins and other doctor approved boosters to keep his immune system at peak performance."

"...more allergic reactions."

a person is either allergic...or not. this reminds me of " i'm a little pregnant."

"...more toxic than usual." is a bit more truthful, I believe.

Re: GlaxoSmithKline Recalls H1N1 Vaccine in Canada Over 'Life-Threatening' Allergy Risk
WINNIPEG — The family of a 38-year-old Manitoba woman who died five days after receiving the H1N1 vaccine are looking for answers as to why it happened.

Soo Lee Wong and her daughter, Angela Truong, both got the H1N1 shot on November 5th.

The family says Wong, who had diabetes, started getting sick a day after getting vaccinated and died a few days later.

Doctors told the family Wong died of a blood infection. More tests will be done to see if the vaccine played any role.

Wong's husband, Thoon Truong, is also caring for his seven-year-old daughter Angela, who has been in the hospital with a fever and swollen, painful legs.

He wants to know whether the two cases related to the vaccine or to something else.

The province is currently investigating two deaths -- both adults who died within seven days of getting the H1N1 shot.

In Sweden several people have died from the Glaxo vaccine some days after the shot but the official stand is that there is no evidence the vaccine caused it..

Meanwhile Glaxo is now officially not able to send vaccines to Sweden because of safety routines according to Swedish officials.

There has been no mentioning in Swedish News about the situation in Canada and Glaxo..

My 3 year old niece had several wart or wart like things on her hand after she got the vaccine. Yes I did inform my family about the vaccine so many times, but in the end they still got it.
I would rather live in a world of fantasy than economy.

Heard on another story about this that One part of Canada had been sent 69,000 viles and only returned some 9000 so 60,000 have already been given before they knew anything.
