Definitely not tooth pick legs because I bicycle.

I have recently been experimenting with gradually reducing the amount of food I eat whilst continuing the modest muscle building regime to see at what point ketosis begins. It is useful to calibrate against the ketosis level so as to know how little food your body really needs.

Yep, without yoga I think I would have aches and pains by now, but my body can still do everything I want it to :)

58 and I took a hell of a fall on the ski slopes about 6 days ago. Jumped back up, checked that all my parts were there and hit it again.

My arms and legs are still quite solid.
Fishing and skiing keeps me a little sane.

many people ride. Not everyone can ride hard.It is slow twitch muscle involvement, huge lungs and heart.Must be able to take alot of pain. And have a large amount of red blood cells.

That is relative to a point though depending on how much your protein intake is.

The first week of ketosis is a real 'pain'.

The strongest person any of us ever knew was a scrawny kid that lived in the Los Gatos. He had an old heavy steel cruising bicycle. He'd bicycle 25 miles to Santa Cruz all the time. He'd be at my brother's house and they'd make plans for the evening, he'd say, "I have to run up to my house and do some shit. Be back at 6." And he'd be back. He'd cycle uphill, 27 miles to his house, did some shit and came back down. It took 15 or so minutes to come down. He'd surf all day and bike back up the hill. My brother said they'd try to wrestle him and he'd be attacked by big guys, all in great shape, and flung them off like a bull tosses a human. he was 5'8'.

Surfing presents an interesting problem in that way because you need a strong upper body to paddle into a wave but once standing, a lower center of gravity from possessing big legs and small upper is an advantage.

If you want to learn how to fall without injury do a martial art like Aikido. After you do a few hundred/thousand falls on a mat you learn how to fall without injury.

If you really want to get fit try Brazillian Jui Jitsu. Its a lot more intense and therefore your more likely to sustain an injury, so its probably not so good for the over 40's.

Re: So you are over 40 and you have small muscles
Sounds kinda strange, but I did not develop decent muscles until I was 38. My arms got very big, and my hands and fingers got nice and big. I always had big legs because I was an alpine ski racer from age 4.

Now I am 58 almost, and things are starting to shrink!

too_sad

Ironically it is people like you who benefit more from a deliberate strength increasing program compared to younger folk.

Take it easy on the protein in your diet. Aim for high nutrient density with caloric restriction. 10 sets of 10 push-ups spaced throughout the day. Too many reps are a waste of time and too few with high loading will damage muscle.
 Quoting: Ossie bloke

That's so real shitty advice. I mean like from beginning to end! Don't listen to this guy- he's confused. 10 sets of 10 pushups? You have to challenge the muscle. And if THAT is challenging it won't be for too long. There's so much wrong with your advice that I just don't even feel like fucking with it. So you get a pass this time.

Looking unattractive is the least of your worries.

Physical strength particularly in arms and shoulders is a major defense during falls, which become increasingly an issue from 40 yrs onward. It could happen trying to change a light bulb whilst standing on a swivel chair, your strength will reduce the injury to the head from the corner of the table resulting in only a 1 month hospital stay instead of 3.

And where's your emergency reserve protein and minerals?

Ice....wow, ever since the Saints won you've become some what cocky, LOL....settle down, he's only giving advice. Most men over 40 look like shit.

And to that "A MAN" poster, what part of starting out with 10 reps of 10 per day didn't you understand. It's very good advice to start out slow to rebuild the muscle and get the body used to working out again.

I am 48, 5'11" 202 lbs. Not in prefect shape, but I hold my own. I've had a love hate relationship with working out since about 40. I think it's because I have to work hard than before, LOL.
