U.S. military drops ban on soldiers getting pregnant
Baghdad, Iraq, The U.S. military has dropped a controversial rule that called for punishing soldiers in northern Iraq for becoming pregnant or impregnating another soldier.

The updated policy "does not include a pregnancy provision," said Maj. Joe Scrocca, spokesman for U.S. Forces-Iraq.
The military also said that any unit must get the permission of the commander of U.S. Forces-Iraq before creating new rules restricting the activity of troops, Scrocca said.

Maj. Gen. Anthony Cucolo created the rule about pregnancy, covering 22,000 people under his command in northern Iraq, including 1,682 women.

Cucolo said he designed the rule to make his soldiers "think before they act."

It prohibited "becoming nondeployable for reasons within the control of the soldier," including "becoming pregnant or impregnating a soldier ... resulting in the redeployment of the pregnant soldier."

Cucolo made the rule part of General Order No. 1.

While violation of any rules in the general order could lead to court-martial, Cucolo insisted that he never intended such a drastic punishment for pregnancy.

All units have a general order that outlines a code of conduct. Commanders have been allowed to add to those rules but not allowed to make the rules any more lax.

But in an e-mail Friday to CNN, Scrocca wrote that from now on, "all requests by subordinate units to impose further restrictions of activities addressed in General Order No. 1 will require approval of the USF-I commander."

Cucolo had no immediate response. His division said he was spending Christmas Day visiting soldiers.

"It is our understanding that there will be no subordinate command general orders below United States Forces-Iraq. Therefore, as soldiers we will comply," Maj. Jeff Allen of the Multi-National Division North wrote in an e-mail to CNN.

Defending the rule last week, Cucolo said he alone would decide each case based on the individual circumstances.

To date, he said, there have been eight cases of women getting pregnant while deployed under his command. Four were given letters of reprimand that were put in their local files, which means the letters wouldn't end up in their permanent files and they wouldn't be a factor under consideration for promotions.

The four others found out they were pregnant soon after deployment; no disciplinary action was taken since they were not impregnated while deployed.

In all cases, the women were sent back to the United States for medical care, as is military policy. Each has the right to submit a letter in her own defense to be included in her file.

Of the men involved, three were reprimanded, Cucolo said. One, a sergeant, was given a more severe punishment of a written reprimand in his permanent file because he fraternized with a subordinate and committed adultery. A letter in the permanent file can affect a person's career because it is evaluated when a service member is considered for promotion.

A fourth man was never reprimanded because the pregnant soldier refused to identify who the father was, and Cucolo did not pursue the issue.

Cucolo said he expected some controversy.

"But I was also willing to deal with this attention because this is important," he said. "I am responsible and accountable for the fighting ability of my task force. I've got to take every measure to preserve my combat power, and that's the reason."

I think they moved the discipline to failing to wear a condom or use birth control.

. .

I thought the ruling to punish pregnant women was unreasonable and rather idiotic.

Glad to see they had second thoughts on this.

As long as Obama provides federal funds so we can abort the baby at tax payers expense then that is a FANTASTIC idea!

BRILLIANT!!!

That is a great idea. It would be soo cool to be born in a war zone. Bombs exploding all around!

I seriously doubt that women get pregnant just to get out of a combat assignment. However, I'm not the brightest bulb in the chandelier and I could be wrong (gasp).

However, if I were to assume that women did get pregnant to get out of a war zone, what should we make of it. We talk about equality, but what does equality really mean? Does it mean that it is unfair for a women to use pregnancy as an excuse to avoid combat when men have no comparable advantage? But if that's true, what value is equality in and of itself?

Suppose that someone breaks into your home and shots your wife to death, and is about to leave. Do you demand that he kill you and your children the name of equality?

Suppose that you're in a combat area where 500 wounded men are dying, and there are only enough surgeons to treat and save one hundred men. Would you insist that the doctors leave everyone to die in the name of equality?

And if you were in a combat area and a few dozen people wanted to leave, should they stay in the name of equality? I think not. I believe that anyone who has become disillusioned with war should be allowed to quit, period. If someone has found a way to avoid the awfulness of war, I applaud them. Equality seems to work better when you are trying to elevate everyone to the same ideal rather than reduce all to the same lower standard. Risking one's life in a senseless war is not, by any definition, a lofty objective. If I were a combat Marine again, I would much rather serve alongside someone who wanted to be there rather than someone – either man or woman – who did not.

There was time when men gave up their seats on the bus to a woman – any woman, not just one who was obviously pregnant. Is that equality? Of course not; it was something better and more noble: respect, courtesy and the appreciation for womanhood. Anyone who watches Judge Joe Brown has heard his motto: Protecting womanhood and promoting manhood. That means a lot. The world, to me, is far better when men are functioning within their biological, physical and psychological constraints, and women are allowed to do the same. Women who are willing to cross the line and TRY to perform the testosterone-dependent works normally done by males are to be commended. If they fail they are not to be condemned.

But that is just my own humble opinion (OK, I lied about the humble part).

actually there never was a ban perse' only in deployment theaters was it prohibited. and with good reason. Some used getting pregnant in the military as an easy out. yet others still moved forward. So what we have here is much to do about nothing. Just a bunch of ugly women trying to influence the military arm.

Re: U.S. military drops ban on soldiers getting pregnant
whole idea why soldiers were kept away from sex is to increase their natural crulty. You bring women into war zone, there is going to be sex and there are going to be children. But it seems weird wy women should give birth in war zone when peoples are killed around them.Do they think expressing one of their most basic right will save them from trouble?
Actually, men and women armies should be separate. When there are women in army, there are going to be fights between soldiers. Not good for army morale.
Observe any army in history of mankind and you will see "uniformity" was the rule.
soldiers were grouped as per their race or religion or origin or anything which brings them closer.
In fact USA have not faced real army battle from many years(except Nazi germany).Vietnam may have been minor irritant but US army have not faced a real war from many years. If a real war breaks,US army will have to withdraw all these silly regulations which are good in normal life but will prove fatal in real battles.

They'll still have many problems getting out prego. I've seen it. My cousin did it right after boot camp. It is common. But wartime? Expect problems.

Just don't go.
