The Philosopher Stoned User ID: 861610 United States 01/10/2010 01:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | That's totally a valid theory. An interesting similar theory involves using super microphones to pick up sounds from the past. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 665685how does that work? According to some physicists, sound waves never completely disappear, they just keep spreading out over time. So if you had a powerful enough mike, you could start picking up sounds from the past. This would include human speech, so if you got lucky and had the time, you might eventually pick up the Gettysburg address... Of course these are the same physicists who insist that a separate universe exists for every possible state of matter. In other words, there's a universe that's exactly the same as this one except one molecule did something different. Then there's another universe where that same molecule did something else different. Of course then you have to add in every single molecule in the universe doing its own thing gets it its own universe, not to mention more than one molecule might do something different. And there's the 6 plus billion years of molecules doing different things. That is a concept that just completely destroys my comprehension skills. And I'm not even stoned... |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 665685You look at this light with a POWERFUL telescope (you can make out individual people etc). A powerful computer calculates this image into a virtual reality, and you enter it as a quest, not being able to affect anything ofcourse. That will work. But if you can travel faster than light, then you can do better than this. Anything that travels faster than light will travel back in time - according to the measurement of at least some observers in inertial frames of reference. All you have to do is cleverly arrange your flight plan so that it's Earth's frame of reference in which you travel back in time. This is mathematically a little tricky, but if you've got an FTL starship then the hard part's already done. Just crack open a special relativity textbook, read up on relativity of simultaneity, and chart a course for the past :-) |

Now think of that man standing still. The question is: Is it possible to be going fast while standing still? |

all_the_kings_horses User ID: 634269 United States 01/10/2010 07:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | most likely there is no past and no present. what we experience as reality is just a deceptively coordinated mass experience, a Gestalt. All of what we see, hear, smell, taste and feel is coordinated with such perfection that we all seriously believe we are experiencing the same things. Since we are harbored in our physical bodies there is no way for any of us cross check and see, feel or hear what another person sees, feels or hears. We actually sit somewhere in something like an individual personalized senses movie theater, other entities are in direct contact with our senses constantly, they specialize in constantly feeding our senses these coordinated illusions. Even while we are right next to one another we are actually far away. Naturally the illusion of time is simply coordinated to make us believe that Time exist. The reason we cannot travel "back" in time is becauses that capacity was not built into the orginal matrix. |

No, a machine that let you travel through time, not calculate how much time has past. And it was useless, so I discarded it. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 859394 United States 01/10/2010 07:27 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hello, just a small topic about this "theory" i cooked up some time ago. Discuss of don't :) Quoting: Anonymous Coward 665685I believe, that the only way to travel to the past is this: You travel faster than the speed of light to a place, where the light from earth is, say, 50 ears older that our "now". You look at this light with a POWERFUL telescope (you can make out individual people etc). A powerful computer calculates this image into a virtual reality, and you enter it as a quest, not being able to affect anything ofcourse. simple :) If you look at it that way then the light from the past is not older, it's younger than 50 years later. I think this is such so simplistic and irrational. There are so many other factors that could be taken into account. |
