TEOTWAWKI or TSHTF, this is what I plan to do.
In response to the pinned thread on survival: for a product of the military, I am disappointed in how much of a coward he sounds like.

My plan:

1) Stay put if the situation allows. I live in a suburban area with lots of lifetime NRA members who are dear friends, and am 25 miles from the inner city.

2) Shoot, without reservation, anyone who tries to steal from, harm or kill me and/or those close to me. I have military training, and am fully capable of defending myself. The guy in that post talked of jails hemoragging raiders and thieves with guns. Well that might be true, but I am willing to bet that I'm a better shot than most if not ALL of them. Strategic heat around the house has definite "bring it on" factor.

3) Fully support and work with my other like minded and honest brothers and sisters to feed and help anyone who asks for it, as long as they are willing to contribute to the efforts to sustain a viable post SHTF community. I have enough open pollinated (renewable) and hybrid seeds of almost every common vegetable, bean, grain and herb to plant a large farm thanks to having contacts at a wholesale seed company.

I believe that most people are good people, and I have faith in that and am willing to bet my life on it. I also have a whole hell of a lot of 230 grain solutions for bad people.

I expect someone to shill me, so shill away :)

Sounds good to me.
I live in the suburbs, 20 miles from a inner city. Good neighbors who are armed.
I'll take my chances here. hf

both your plans sound fine- that guy isn't a coward at all, just not everybody lives in the neighborhood you do surrounded by NRA peeps...

This may work for you. A conclave of NRA members?
Sounds better than 95% of the folks out there.

It will all depend on an indivudal situation.
If you lived in the heart of a gun-free city, D.C., NYC, Philly, Denver etc...
I bet you would look at it differently.

But that is part of preperation, surronding yourself with good people.

It is a general statement, but arguably true. A good example would be Katrina. I know people who sat in dead stop traffic for 10 hours to travel 60 miles inland. This went on for days. Not to dwarf Katrina, but TEOTWAWKI or TSHTF is much MUCH worse than that. Sitting duck, unless you own a teleporter. If you bug out close by like the guy that posted that thread, do you really think hungry people won't venture to the forest to either shoot deer or forage for food? Come on.

I personally would rather die, not only defending my turf, but defending and helping honest good people survive a cataclysmic circumstance. Dying in the middle of the sticks because I was only thinking of myself puts no weight in my expiration whatsoever. You may live a bit longer than the rest, but you die a coward or have to live with yourself in reflection after it blows over.

Do you really think that NRA members are all crazy gun wielding killers? If you do, then you have a very VERY narrow mind. Best widen it a bit, or it will disappear. I am saying that, people like us, here on GLP, have heard the warning.

With Katrina, if you had got out of town upon the first warning, you would have been OK.

The warning for this big SHTF scenario gives us months or possibly years. There is time. No one here needs to be stuck on a road or in a traffic jam.

Every situation is different. The set up you describe is pretty good. It might bring some hope to survivors.
But while you hunker down, there will be gangs in the cities that will organize and raid SWAT/Nat Guard facilities.
Eventually they will make an attempt to overrun you.

Yes, I think your weapons are tied to your ego. I'm not anti-gun, to the contrary I support gun rights. But you made it quite clear from the outset that you have "military training" and you'd basically shoot anything that casts a shadow on your door.

I'd assume that your "brothers and sisters" are also those who are "military trained" and will also shoot at anything that moves.

I think you're young and over-confident and loaded for bear. That makes you dangerous and someone to avoid.

We're all out here because we love the seclusion and the quiet. However, in a pinch the neighbors are just fantastic and will jump in and do anything in the world for you. I've seen them buy each other's groceries when we get rained in (we live in monsoon country and it takes 4 wheel drive to get to some of our homes when it's raining. I was out in my car one afternoon and it started to pour. By the time I got near my house I was stuck in 8" deep mud in a BMW 7 with NO FOUR WHEEL DRIVE. One of my neighbors came by with a couple of tow straps, and pulled me and the Bimmer all the way home to make sure we didn't get stuck again. When my neighbor saw I was in business clothes, he wouldn't even let me get out in the mud to put the tow rope on the car! And I'd never seen him except to wave as we drove in and out for the previous year that we'd lived there! Several of my neighbors asked me to do a first aid course for them and I did. They took me to the gun shops and got me the right weapons at the right prices and then taught me how to shoot them! (City boy - guns are all but illegal in NYC where I lived!) I have these guys call me if their family has an injury (I'm a doc) and ask whether it's serious enough to get them to an ER or not. A couple of times one of the guys told me he had no insurance and his kid had cut himself deeply enough to require sutures. I cleaned up the wound and sutured it for him. He tried to pay me and of course I refused. This guy and his wife think we walk on water since that day. In the city I'd have been afraid of a lawsuit had I done such a thing. Out here, people are actually thankful. I can count on these guys in ways I never even realized I wanted to count on other men for. They laugh at my pathetic efforts to ride a horse and I tease them about doing mouth to mouth does NOT require your tongue down someones' throat, etc., like one of our course members tried on his first time giving real CPR.

So I know what you mean. I think I'd do about the same. I think there are enough of us, and we're close enough - who knows - they may someday save my life or vice versa. I never knew this kind of stuff still existed in the USA but moving here almost by accident, I found out that it did or does!

Let's hope neither of us have to rely on this... but reality is the way the shit is shaking out,we probably will have to. Somehow the 10 miles to the nearest grocery or gas station seems comforting now when a few months ago it was really daunting and a pain in my neck. funny how your perspective can change things!

Re: TEOTWAWKI or TSHTF, this is what I plan to do.
ROFLMAO! Do you think I attribute my weapons in any way shape or form to EGO? WTF? wtf They are tools to defend myself, my family, my friends and YOU if it came down to it. Do you really think that NRA members are all crazy gun wielding killers? If you do, then you have a very VERY narrow mind. Best widen it a bit, or it will disappear. I'm not going to open that can of worms any further. I'll leave it at that.

Excuse me, sir. wtf????? The fact that I can defend myself is suspect to you? Did you read the post that this responded to? Shit, I wish I didn't join the military, but I got damn good skills out of it to weather a bad situation. Does that make me an asshole? Perhaps, in your mind.

"Brothers and Sisters" are friends, family and anyone else that would rather not resort to violence and act like a human being. I prefer to help them. Bad thing? Maybe. Good thing? I hope so. If not, oh well. I TRIED.

So is it the pile of meat, err... bodies that makes up the free food?

The people that "bug out" will be the first ones to take a dirt nap.
not necessarily true, generalize much?

You may live a bit longer than the rest, but you die a coward or have to live with yourself in reflection after it blows over.

don't worry about trench, he's a first class douchebag. a weekend warrior of the worst kind. motherfucker thinks he's neo, dodging bullets. too much tv and video games for that pretender. If your situation is as described, then you would have no reason to leave. As long as you have enough ammo that is, there is something to be said for fighting for what's right. i'd take you as my neighbor anyday.

Re: TEOTWAWKI or TSHTF, this is what I plan to do.
