scimitar 12/08/2005 10:06 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I used to listen to shortwave many years ago as a teenager. It was a lot of fun, I have also thought about getting a good receiver, Of course it will never take the place of GLP for world wide communication, unless of course the NET goes down...... Uh Oh! One Truth..... many realities |

Perseus -]+[- 12/08/2005 10:06 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | When civilization goes down, no net, no electricity, only SW remains to us to see if the other world is still up. After the EM Pulses only old rigs with tubes will continue to work or everything protected inside a Faraday cage. Also solar panels and wind generators to feed some truck batteries, a 12v-110v-220v converter will do the job, at least as long as you stay alive ;) (for kchibo users, i always use aaa rechargeable batteries (longer life and you buy them only once ;) |

Ham 12/08/2005 10:06 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Check EBay for older used ham gear. They are very good quality. Prices can be quite low. You want one that includes "general coverage," not just the ham bands. The comment above re "reception is better at night" is not quite correct. Hi frequency bands (10 MHz and up) are better during the day. Lower freqs. are better at night. Frequency and wavelength are an inverse relationship--the hight the freq., the lower the wavelength. Spend the money for a proper lightning arrestor--a strike will ruin our day! |
Prussian Blue 12/08/2005 10:06 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I would say having a shortwave radio is essential given the state that our world is in. If TSHTF I think you can kiss the internet goodbye and mainstream media wonīt be worth a tinkers dam. Being able to get reports from throughout the world and also from amateur radio operators will be essential. As far as which radio to get,,, make sure (A) it has digital tuning, (B) it can receive upper/lower single sideband (LSB/USB)so you can listen to amateurs speaking and (C) it can be operated using batteries. Also, having memories to store frequencies is a plus. Many interesting programs are broadcast from the US on WWCR. This SW broadcaster, which runs 4 transmitters, carries programs by, among many others, the following people: Alex Jones Brent Johnson Brother Stair Clay Douglas Jack Blood Jackie Patru Jeff Bennett John Stadtmiller Pete Peters Steve Quayle Texe Marrs Another US SW station is WBCQ, but their programming is not as "informative" as that of WWCR. The frequencies on which you can receive these stations are: WWCR 3.210 MHz 5.070 5.765 5.935 7.465 9.975 9.985 12.160 13.845 15.825 WBCQ 5.105 MHz 7.415 9.330 17.495 To learn when the various programs are on the air, check the program guides at these websites: www.wwcr.com and www.wbcq.com . As far as an antenna goes, a protable SW radio will have a built-in telescoping antenna - this is often good enough. If you need to boost your reception you can attach a piece of wire - 10, 20, 50, ... 100 feet? The length doesnīt matter all that much on receiving. Also, just a plain old wire add-on antenna is sufficient - no need for a dipole, folded dipole, etc. (these would be necessary if you were transmitting). The height of the antenna, for all practical purposes, is not that critical (unless, of course, you are transmitting). For those concerned with survival communications (etc.) you may want to consider getting an amateur radio operatorīs license - if TSHTF I beleive cell phone service will be unreliable since it is very easily controlled. Getting a "HAM" radio license is not all that difficult if you are motivated. For more info, check out the American Radio Relay Leagueīs (ARRL) website at www.arrl.com . Ham radio can be a lot of fun not to mention a very educational and rewarding hobby. 73īs --> In Beautiful Ohio <-- KB8NNG |
jt-3d 12/08/2005 10:06 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Iīve got a Kenwood TS-2000. Granted itīs a tranceiver and it costs around $1600 but itīs a damn good radio. I also have a Halicrafters S-120 (I think). Thatīs what I started with before I got my ham license. I second getting your ham license at some point. No need to settle for merely listening to shortwave. Get your license and make some shortwaves of your own. Though you could take practice tests at QRZ.com and EHAM.com and pass the test eventually, I recommend getting a study guide. Itīs faster that way and you actually learn something. Hope to catch you on the air, 73 KE5BWT |
