Here's a series of photos to accompany the article, just so you can put faces to the names:

[link to www.washingtonpost.com]

These people are nowhere near destitute; they're just unemployed. And yeah, I pretty much have to say "FUCK THIS GUY" for all of the beer, smokes and lottery tickets--yes, lottery tickets--he buys while he "worries" about how to feed his kids.

Here's a quote from page 10 of the photo series:

At the Winners Circle bar, Scott buys about $20 worth of lottery tickets as part of his Monday routine. Scott said he rarely drinks at home or in front of his kids, and he never drank at work. But sometimes he drinks here to relieve some stress. "I don't want to end up in a bell tower with a high-powered rifle," he said. "I need to let loose in some way."

FUCK THIS GUY!

By the way, the daughter is two -- the son is SEVENTEEN! Why isn't he working?

Fuck you, why arent you rebuildin Haiti,A-Holio.

Here we go!

This is the chapter where a worthwhile thread turns into worthless heap of mindless drivel.

It's a GLP time honored tradition. charlie

Don't you understand that that is the entire point of the article?

And look, IT WORKS!

That's the only thing anyone got out of it.

This article is designed to get you to blame the guy for his own problems, and you do.

Job well done Mr. Schwartzman, job well done...

+ infinity

Glad somebody else gets it. I'll be people have spent more energy on this clown than on these:

[link to www.businessinsider.com]

Or on gold-digger ex-wives who 'struggle' with 30K a month which turns out to be only 1% of hubbie's fortune.
 Quoting: Jessica6

Not only this, but this article is such a pathetic rhetorical caricature of the "typical" mid-western family that it made me want to vomit. This family is NOT a real family, it is a family that he made up as an "for example" and then went on to vomit every last stereotype he could muster. Yes, this writer is disgusting - sitting aloft from his high perch, judge, jury and not impartial witness. Gross

lazy, stupid okies? a cliche in itself, the irony!

Attendant Two: You and me got sense. Them Okies got no sense and no feelings. They ain't human. A human being wouldn't live the way they do. A human being couldn't stand to be so miserable.
Attendant One: Just don't know any better, I guess.

This is how you get things done. First off. Go get some official stats from the computer at the library. Which city in which state of this country has the lowest unemployment rate? OK. Kids your moving into grandmas basement.

I have to go look for work. He drives off 1500 miles and winds up in a state that still has a somewhat manageable economy. He finds a job. He gets a small one bedroom apartment. He gets his ass off of that fucking recliner.

The question is not why have they got toys!
The question is why is there a welfare office in the first place!
I have a copy of the constitution and i can not find the part about welfare office anywhere.
Of course the world is full of theives and desperate people who would not be desperate if our government did not keep sending our jobs overseas.
the people of America are being STOLEN FROM.UK too.
These people have an EARNED BIRTHRIGHT!
Look up the word LOCUST in the bible,do you think it is all about insects?

Asshole still drinkin beer in the bar, and buying 4 packs of brand name smokes?
STFU jerk.

I thought the same thing, and his old lady goin to Subway with 5 of their remaining 70 bux, 5 bux @ the grocery can get ya alot more than 1 sandwich

Yes and the defeatist attitude is the worst part of all! If this is what the country is comprised of, yes, we are indeed done for!

For $1 you can buy a variety of dried beans, onyon/onion and other seasonings to make them delicious, next day they are chili, etc. and feed that whole family for days if they had to do it for the $5 sandwich. Of course, God forbid, they would have to learn to cook and stop whining long enough to do it.

Antidepressants, my ass! He needs to get off his and take care of his family and learn to ge grateful for what he does have.

Ever notice hhow people with this self-pity attitude are just about always the ones who end up in this kind of situation and frame of mind?

You will never have more until you learn to appreciate what you already have.

You know I can identify with poverty as I have been poor.
Here's what I did not do when I was poor and was wondering how I would feed my child.
There was no beer and cigarettes, no K-mart lay-a-ways as we dressed ourselves in clean clothes purchased from garage sales and the Good Will. There was no eating at Sub-way and out anywhere for that matter. I cooked at home every single meal. I did not gamble on anything nor do I now.

I never allowed myself to become fat and slovenly and dirty. Poverty does not equal dirty.

I took that opportunity to put myself through college while working every mundane piece of shit job I could find. It was a bitch. But we did it. We never gave up and I never asked my family or friends for a dime.

I never received food stamps, welfare or any government subsidy. Truth is if you are sitting back waiting for something to happen to you or for you then you are already doomed.

Unbelievable. It's hard to feel sorry for people who put beer, cigarettes, foot long subs, and gambling before feeding their children. This has less to do with losing a job than a mindset.

Look at this guy. Would you hire him? He needs a bath and to clean himself up and stop feeling sorry for himself, it sends a terrible message to his children.

Rant over.

I can relate to you because it was the same way for me.
It's a mindset. Unfortunately this is a story that is all across Amerika.

I see this constantly in my line of work. People with electronic gadgets, SUV's, pills, booze, cigarettes, drugs, and are on public assistance. I see it in every state I've ever worked in. They can afford all of these things but want free health care. Go figure. Priorities.

Well the warmth of the human spirit is certainly doing well on GLP I see. So tell me exactly how many paychecks are you ahead? And what will you do when YOUR job is gone and not to be replaced? How about Federal and state governments cutting their payrolls by half? And how many states are running into huge deficits? Think it can't happen? See if you still have that attitude in 6 months.

Re: True Story Guys--Welcome to the future of America
Well then, let's talk about the REAL hardworking Americans who are nearly destitute because the PTB are pulling off the biggest scam and movement of wealth in the history of our planet, shall we?

My daughters 23 year old friend graduated with a Bachelors in Foreign Business over a year ago. We are a coastal state (WA) and he has been unable to find a good job in that time. Currently working at a clothing wholesaler making a pittance and struggling to pay his school loans and living expenses.

A couple we are close friends with are about to lose their home. Husband managed a trucking crew. We all know what's going on with the trucking industry. They've for almost a year attempted to save the home they built with their own hands by offering the bank interest only payments or refi to lower payments, they've filled out too many forms to count to qualify for the Obama plan to save their home (they totally qualified at every point but new forms were sent again and again and finally after almost a year they were told they do not qualify but not given a reason why) and the bank just last week told them they have until next week to come up with $36,000.00 or move out.

My father, who is on a fixed income, keeps his house at freezing temps, doesn't go anywhere, and eats crap food and he is living on two retirements! You know why? His lenders suddenly raised interest rates on two loans he had. Then his auto and home insurance company found out he had higher interest rates and used that as an excuse to raise his insurance rates!

I can keep going about REAL Americans who are really on the verge of being destitute and why but I doubt many posters in this thread have the ability to follow the why's and wheretofor's of what's REALLY going on.

Until it happens to them and their loved ones. Maybe then the'll cast stones at the REAL perps.

It is depressing but I would like to extend a small ray of sunshine, its times like these that make us better people. We struggle through hard times it forges us like a good steel. Our elders knew tough times and they pulled themselves up by their boot straps and did whatever they had to to survive. Shovel shit.. well so be it!

We don't like to have the strife, its frightening to not have answers or be dependent upon others for basic essentials. But we survive, and with 1/2 a brain we learn alot on how to protect ourselves from such disasters in the future.

The poor people in the USA are unlike the poor anywhere else in the world. Our poor have television, cell phones, at least one car, furniture, eat at fast food places. Unlike say Haiti where people have been known to sell the straw from their mattress for food for their young. I guess what I am trying to say is until we hit the skids we remain spoiled and disengaged in how to survive economic crisis's.

Well, yes, certainly. Tis true there are levels of poverty and much of it based on perception and habits.

And yet, we fail to discuss and focus on the CAUSE. Greed, too much power held by too few, and the naivete and ignorance of the masses.

WHY do the people in Haiti sell their mattress straw for food? WHY are the banks allowed to steal the homes from the people who not only built them but WANT to pay for them in a manner that is realistic to their needs? WHY is healthy food more expensive than garbage called food? And WHY is there such a profit in healthcare?

This isn't rocket science formulas or the economy on another planet. This is OUR lives and OUR planet and we need to extend our understanding in order to set things right again.

Too few good leaders, I suppose.

Re: True Story Guys--Welcome to the future of America
"Tom the Tinker" assumed the leadership of the Whiskey Rebellion in the early 1790s. He came about after it was decided that to merely attack tax collectors or those who rented offices and lodging to tax collectors wasn't enough; pressure needed to be applied to those who had registered their stills and were paying the tax. In essence, Tom the Tinker viewed compliance with the law as contemptible an action as collecting the whiskey tax. William Hogeland has described the situation thus:

You might find a note posted on a tree outside your house, requiring you to publish in the Gazette your hatred of the whiskey tax and your commitment to the cause; otherwise, the note promised, your still would be mended. Tom had a wicked sense of humor and a literary bent: "mended" meant shot full of holes or burned. Tom published on his own too, rousing his followers to action, telling the Gazette's editor in cover notes to run the messages or suffer the consequences.[9]

Groups formed calling themselves Tom the Tinker's Men. They assured Tom the Tinker's threats were carried out. Some believe John Holcroft, a leading member of the Mingo Creek Association and veteran of Shays' Rebellion[10], was Tom the Tinker, or perhaps the author of the letters attributed to Tom, but this has never been proven. It is not known whether Tom was an actual individual or a character created by the leading members of the Whiskey Rebellion to serve as their leader, much like Ned Ludd's role as leader of the Luddites. Hogeland takes issue with the notion that "Tom the Tinker" was a pseudonym or nom de guerre for one of the other participants in the rebellion, saying, "Tom wasn't an alias for a person. He was the stark fact that loyal opposition to the resistance was disallowed. Tom was Mingo Creek personified

I can understand why he doesn't want to let go of his simple pleasures, but we do have to get over feeling entitled to that which is above and beyond survival. Around the globe there are millions struggling and suffering and we are among the most fortunate but still forget to count our blessings.

Yes, but if we don't buy that occasional Subway sandwich, or replace the brakepads or pick up a few socks and T-shirts, soon those little shops will close and there will be even more people desperate and hungry. What happens when it ALL shuts down? Those little shops don't make $$ from rich people patronage but from the ordinary working (or in this case not working) people. I once worked for a company that paid well, was living pretty good, then they decided to sock everyone with a $500/month pay CUT. Guess what? After paying bills and the rent, I didn't have enough left over for bus fare to work. And that happened overnight. Suddenly I couldn't afford a beer, couldn't afford the Sunday paper. There were no lunches out or dinners or movies or any of the crap that ordinary people do. So I found another job, gave up living in my favourite part of town, moved to a less expensive place and tried to start again. Now I'm making more money than I did at the other place, but once again when bills are paid, rent, utilities, etc, which have all gone up substantially in the last few years, not to mention food prices, there is no money left after food is bought. It doesn't seem right. And it isn't.

>>>I wonder how many here have any idea how bad Elkhart Indiana is and has been been for employment. Believe me, they aren't that far behind Detroit

Just how sustainable is a local economy built on building 8mpg gashog behemoth fun vehicles anyway?
in the era of 75$ a barrel oil
Delusional.
There are slightly used ones being practically given away that are superior to a tent, during the rest of the depression living in obamaville though....may pick one up myself just in case bad comes to worse

Yeah, I guess about as sustainable as Detroit was making all those small, mid-sized and luxury vehicles.

Or about as sustainable as Pittsburg was making that stupid steel.

Or about as sustainable as California and those tech jobs!

oh come on--these Rvs, as the name says, are for fun, not practical transportation--the retiree equivalent of the yokel's harley--expensive impractical vehicles for fun.
these times don't have much spare cash for expensive fun. There are big better-times motorboats, bikes, and rvs going for a song all over the country--there is no money thus no market
harley sales down 49% last year--what does that say, except if you don't have enough you cant piss away 20K on a toy motorcycle?

most people are still working, and the sensible ones drive a frugal gas sipper to commute to work because that comes first, getting to work

only shortsighted idiots, or people who haul big stuff in their work, should be buying bloated pickups and suvs now--but alas, i see ni**e* rich assholes driving new ones all over town "because the deal was so good it's cheaper than that puny car"..
don't cry to me when gas goes back to $4 a gal

DO THE MATH
YOU CAN"T SPEND MONEY BUT ONCE

I guess you folk still believe the FOSSIL FUEL myth.
OIL IS PLENTIFULL. It is not made form dead dinasours, as the oil companies would like you to believe.
There are no ancient forests in your gas tank.
It is renewable resource.
A-Biotic oil, google it.
The end is near,everyone knows.
