What's wrong with it? Simply this, it has become a disparaging attack. It used to mean slow or dull or even backwards in development, but now it mainly means "I'm angry at you and trying to make you feel bad".

So, calling even a developmentally disabled person a "Retard" is hurtful and any thinking person KNOWS it is being used that way.

Notice that no one gets up at arms when the slow kid is called slow?

That's because it hasn't become an attack word.

bye bye means black, and African Americans have darker skins than most...

But the word bye bye is not used to establish their skin type, but to attack them... People use it to create anger and to harm others on purpose.

I agree that politically correct language sometimes goes to far.

But there is a far cry from insisting that we change the term mailman to mail carrier or fireman to fire person (which are terms not meant to harm anyone) and asking people not to call names.

Rush is smart enough to be able to think that one through, is I have to think he is trying to stir up trouble amongst those less capable of seeing the difference.
