A principal and assistant principal have been shot at Inskip Elementary School, and a suspect is now in custody.

Elise Luna and Amy Brace were both shot in the office area just before 1 p.m.

Knoxville Police Chief Sterling Owen IV didn't go into specifics but said it was his understanding that one of the two was headed into surgery, and the other had already been treated.

Owen expressed optimism that both would survive their injuries and said their families were at the hospital with them.

Luna has been principal at Inskip Elementary since January 2004. Before that, she was the assistant principal at Sarah Moore Greene.

Brace has been assistant principal at Inskip Elementary since 2008. Before that, she was the magnet lead educator at Sarah Moore Greene Magnet.

KPD spokesman Darrell DeBusk said those two female employees were alert and conscious when they were taken to UT Medical Center.

They were shot in the office area of the school.

Police got the call at 12:49 p.m.

The man taken into custody has been confirmed by police as an employee at the school. Police said that means he was authorized to be in the building.

They are not going into details about what role he had in the school.

He was arrested a short distance away at Central and Aurora.

No charges have yet been brought. As such, he has not been identified publicly by police.

Police believe he was the only shooter.

The suspect was arrested just 14 minutes after the 911 call, at 1:03 p.m.

Two students were in the school at the time of the shooting, Knox County Schools said. They were in the process of being picked up by their parents.

Knox County schools dismissed early due to snow.

Police commenced going through the school, room by room, to be sure no one else is hiding in the school or that there's nothing else they should be aware of. As of 1:45 p.m., they've completed that sweep.

The school has been cleared, and police are interviewing employees who may have been witnesses.

10 News has a crew on the scene. We'll have updates as soon as possible.
