Here's some tips I've learn over the years.

I use to not be able to fall asleep on my back. So if I woke up in the middle of the night, and didn't have any stressful plans for the next day (not a work day), I'd lie on my back and wait for the transition to take place. It use to be scary at times, but now it's easy.

So my point is, find a sleeping position you can't normally fall asleep in, especially after you've already dosed off for a few hours.

I've also found that sometimes I wake up in the early morning hours with an upset stomach/intestine. After relief, I go back to bed and have major success in vivid/conscientious dreams. I can only guess it's from the release of toxins in your body, or the lack of energy being used on digestion.
