Poppy the springer spaniel ran over the edge of the clifftop during a walk at a beauty spot in East Sussex.

She plunged into the water but survived and managed to swim to shore where she waited until a RNLI crew arrived.

Her owners - Kelly Ixer, 26, and Ben Markwick, 31, said they were ''indebted'' to the lifeboat team.

On the day of the accident, the dog was being walked by Mr Markwick's sister Lia and her partner Stephen Winslade.

Mr Winslade, 31, said: ''She ran to the edge and just disappeared.

''She is really well trained and well behaved but I think she ran so fast there was no chance of her stopping.

''I threw myself down and looked over the edge and saw her paddling.

''I could see there was a beach she was heading for.''

Volunteer lifeboat crew member Gavin Butcher was part of the Newhaven-based team that headed to Brass Point, Seven Sisters, on February 14.

A small ''Y'' boat was launched to rescue the spaniel from the beach underneath the cliff.

Mr Butcher, 46, from Newhaven, said: ''She was shivering - she was cold and nervous but apart from that she was as good as gold.

''Myself and another crew member have both got springer spaniels ourselves so we were very relieved.

''Springer spaniels tend to get excited and I believe she was chasing a seagull at the time.

''That's why we always recommend keeping dogs on a lead on the cliffs.''

Poppy was treated for a partially collapsed lung but has now made a full recovery.

My cocker spaniel had major surgery today. He is all bandaged up on the front legs and right side of his face.
Poor doggy! He is going to be okay.
