Question to Migraine Sufferers
I have to go to the ER most of the time to get a shot to get rid of the migraine.

To those of you who do the same - do you go home and sleep for 14-20 hours straight?

The shots knock me out and it's the only way to fully get rid of it - to sleep it off.

I usually just smoke some weed, and if that doesn't work - I smoke even more weed.

If that doesn't work, I smoke even more, then go to bed.

Works every time.

Re: Question to Migraine Sufferers
I've been coping with migraine for most of my life and have tried most of the target specific "triptan" drugs like Zomig, etc.,beta blockers, which need to be taken daily, totally out of the question. Ergotamine or "ergot" drugs which did not work on me. My physician finally said it came down to pain management and prescribed percocet, a painkiller, and promethazine, a powerful antihistamine used to treat moderate to severe allergic reactions as well as nausea. Taken together you'll sleep it off.

I do not medicate each time I have a migraine with the exception of Excedrin Migraine and a cup of strong coffee or an ice cold coke.

Going to the emergency room each time you have a headache is not practical. I would recommend that you seek a physician who specializes in headaches and/or pain management. Perhaps some of the newer drugs will work for you without making you drowsy. It's totally trial and error as many people respond differently to various therapies.

Best of luck -

Re: Question to Migraine Sufferers
For me, the trick is nipping it in the bud. If I'm alert and can notice the migraine coming on, 2 excedrin, a cold washcloth, and a nap will do it. It's weird...if I'm successful I can feel a buzzing sensation in my head as it goes away. If I don't nip it, it has to run its course of 3 days.

I tried those other drugs and all they did was make me loopy. They diminished the symptoms for sure, but prolonged the migraine for up to 8 days.

Don't you love it when you're in the middle of one of these migraines, you warn your coworkers, and invariably there's one who just keeps chatting at you, and thinks you're rude for not responding in kind?

Aspartame, even the smallest amount, triggers migraines in some people. That crap is in gum, yogurt, popsicles, almost anything that says 'low fat' or 'sugar free'. And, because people are on to them, they are now changing the name to "Aminosweet". Just a heads up in case it might help someone. hf

Re: Question to Migraine Sufferers
In combination with Imitrex, which I take when I have a migrane, I have been using the following natural treatment (believe it or not, actually prescribed by my physician)on a daily basis.

CoEnzyme Q10
Magnesium
Riboflavin (B2)

There are some journal articles on the web that describe the success and amounts to take. The results show to decrease both the frequency and severity. Personally, it is hard to say but I haven't had one in almost 2 years after having them constantly every 6-9 months. Could have been some other environmental factors or diet also, but still it can't hurt.

not to offend you but most migraine sufferers are patterned after people who are holding in some sort of issue, most have caregiving attitudes, that they should do things for others because if they don't they might not like them or what will they say. Most if not all migraine sufferers are people pleasers, and that is not wrong but that is there main concern "what will others think". Once that is changed by doing for others when they really need it then the migrains do not occur. please do not be offended, but 97% of all illnesses are stress related. the other 3% are organic illnesses, birth defects, broken arms legs, cuts auto accident traumas.

The only thing that ever worked for me was to get in a bath as hot as I could get it. Stay in as long as possible. You can put a cold wash cloth on your head and neck if you want. The hot water pulls the blood down and away from your head. It works. If it comes back you have to get back in the tub. I would be shaky and nauseous but my head would stop throbbing. Mine were so bad it felt like my head was going to explode - and the water is the only thing that really worked ever.

Have you ever tried a valium, just one when the migrane starts.

Look up valium message boards and quite a few migrane sufferers sing its vitrues for stopping migrane's dead in their tracks.

Obviously it isn't something you want to take on a regular basis, but it could be helpful on a 'every-so-often' basis.

I have maxalt, imitrex and a couple of other migraine prescriptions on hand.

Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.

I've also tried the daily regimen.

Used to have them 3-4 times a year - and they only started for me 11 years ago. Never had them before that.

This is my first one in 14 months.

sux....

I've taken heavy pain meds today - works briefly and then the "twinge" starts setting back in...

sux...

Re: Question to Migraine Sufferers
I started getting these little lovelies in 5th grade. That was about 35 years ago. Never forget my first one (basically because of the auroral effects) that I would later come to despise!
Anyhow, when they came out with Imitrex I thought it was a miracle. It didn't take away the aura or the pain fully or even make me functual for the first two days, but at least I wasn't relying on cola, asprin and a cold compresses anymore (the advice given to my mother to do for me) which was basically useless.

To all the posts about this being "Psychological", flip

Yes, stress can trigger them, but there is plenty of evidence that these are heriditary. Usually passed from male to female and visa versa. Now they are starting to learn that they might be a form of a seizure. I take an anti-seizure med.(gabapentin) three time a day and it seems to keep them pretty much at bay. But on the off chance one does break through, I still use Imitrex for the pain - and yes go to bed for HOURS - and try to be functionable by the third day.

I wish you all the best in your search, fellow sufferer!!
