OK, let me see if I got this right, aether...
The actual magnetic field lines don't exist. There is no material structure. It is not like some field lines that consist of 'magnetic field lines' are just lying there dormant, waiting for a charge to come through.
Instead, magnetic field lines are created by other forces (example, earth's atmosphere and space) and inside those relationships is an area where the effects of the charge can run through, constrained by the 'other' forces (atmosphere and space) to stay inside those relationships. So, instead of having a specific medium that the charge can run through (that is called the magnetic field lines), it is actually just the area that the charge can run through most easily, so that is the path it goes down.
I purposefully made this simple for easier understanding, without getting into any of the specifics, so don't get one me
