One thing is for certain, we will not be told the ratio in the atmosphere, we shall only experience the contact effect. Imagine continued exposure to Hydrogen Sulphate and Benzene alone. There are many other lethal compounds as well blending with our life supporting oxygen ( as our folage decreases ). It's been more than a month now. And it is getting worse hour by hour. One stand out thing about the Exxon-Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound is this : Exxon lied from the very beginning to the never-ending end. It was all lies and a dragged out court case until many died. Twenty years later (2009) and Suzuki says they are still finding oil in the animals and birds. Offshore drilling is banned for a reason. This is the reason. And the heavy hand of the State bars public access (and pics) to oil soaked beaches. No public means a lot more wildlife that could be saved, will die. It is really really bad and going to get MUCH worse. You Southerners... start Screaming. Scream louder. It really is time. |

Oh look, now the house of Saud has nothing to worry about in respect to the USA becoming energy dependant. Gee... I wonder who benefitted the most from this 'Accident'? lol. Follow the money is my best advice. If it was an accident, it sure as hell helped out a whole heap of people. |

If i had good health, a passport and some money for a flight, i'd be over there with a shovel to try to help. I don't see any fat cat executives from BP doing anything. Come to think of it, i don't see Barry Soetoro doing shit either. More to the point, i don't see millions of Americans on the beaches building sand barriers. Just a scattered few people in lab coats. Who cares who is to blame? Do Americans not care about their country? The devastation will be felt for decades. Get a shovel and DO SOMETHING! The damage being caused is dwarfing 9/11... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 981485 United States 05/25/2010 06:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | WTF! BP execs patting themselves on the back for all their "innovation" and "learning" as they chart themselves forward through this unprecedented challenge. Challenge? Learning? Excuse me! Shouldn't all that needed "learning" have been learned already long before actually punching through this rock formation? Shouldn't the approach to deep sea drilling have been akin to NASA's space program when the goal was to put a man on the moon? First you try sub-orbital, then orbital, then orbit the moon without landing, all the while building up your knowledge and experience base including all the "what if's". Finally, and only after understanding the problem as completely as possible from all the different angles do you land men on that hostile surface. And even then nasty surprises like the launch pad fire of Apollo 1 and the almost marooned Apollo 13 may intrude. Shouldn't the Gulf have been alive in that first week with backups and emergency equipment at the ready with already tested emergency procedures A, B, C , D already in place? And if all this prior planning is just too much to expect from corpgov then there was an even simpler approach available as well. Since the gold standard of killing a blown out well appears to be drilling a relief well then it could easily have been mandated that all deep sea drilling be done in pairs with each well immediately available to kill the other should something unforeseen happen. Sure it would double the "cost" but that doubled cost is the "true" cost as we now see. There'd better be heads rolling on this. Of course instead we're more likely to get an oil tax increase or surcharge aimed at the general public. [link to www.breitbart.com] "Never let a crisis go to waste", they say. And just like the so-called highway "trust fund" you can bet that drilling safety will appear far down the list of beneficiaries. So what are the "take-aways" from this travesty? First, the "can-do" spirit of the Church of American Technology - improvisation and pragmatic - is just another name for socialization of risk and privatization of profit and has no place on the deep ocean floor. Either treat it respectfully as NASA did the moon program or declare it off limits. Secondly, speaking of off limits, the industry actually does have a pretty good safety record in the easier, more accessible areas. Areas which have been declared off limits for political rather than safety reasons. Thirdly, CONgress seems all too readily cowed by industry and academia. Certainly they have no interest in simply representing their constituents who have repeatedly made their voices known on such things as the Wall Street bail out, auditing the Fed and health care "reform". All to no avail. So now we're going to be treated to a long playing double ringed circus. Stage left will feature the "Who coulda knowde" clown act, and the "What's done is done, let's move on" crocodile tears act. Stage right will feature a Keystone Cops' riot of improvisational gee-whiz gimcracks and whirly-gigs, "top hats" and "junk shots". No doubt culminating in "Let's nuke it". When all you have is a hammer everything appears to be a nail. Why is it we have only a hammer? Oh, I know: "who coulda knode". Meanwhile, 5000 feet under the Gulf, anytime you want to look, day or night (except when BP decides to interrupt the feed), there it sits in quiet contempt: thousands of barrels billowing out... mocking and giving the lie to everything that has been said and will be said up here on the surface. |
