How many months of mud do they have? first of all its not really "mud" it's a toxic mix of nasty shit... and they only have so much of the mix available.. Right! In geotechnical engineering, drilling fluid is a fluid used to drill boreholes into the earth. Often used while drilling oil and natural gas wells and on exploration drilling rigs, drilling fluids are also used for much simpler boreholes, such as water wells. Liquid drilling fluid is often called drilling mud. The three main categories of drilling fluids are water-based muds (which can be dispersed and non-dispersed), non-aqueous muds, usually called oil-based mud, and gaseous drilling fluid, in which a wide range of gases can be used. Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 983349 United Kingdom 05/27/2010 09:53 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The more mud pumped down, the less oil and gas is escaping around it. Remember that they do believe it's possible that the interior casing is holding, so the mud is pumped down the annular space. There could be a lot of voids to fill. The pressure situation does change actual flow rates so the entire process is pretty slow. If it is just mud we see, this is good news-they just have to keep pumping until they are sure there is enough down there to hold against the pressure from the bottom of the well. Quoting: Pilot_007It seems logical that the oil itself could be halted since the mud is heavier than the oil/gas mixture. I would think the hydrates might take a little longer due to composition. Its possible it could take another few days to create and deliver the special concrete for permanent plug. Keep your fingers crossed that the BOP continues to hold. "If it is just mud we see" it is just mud according to sky news Do you have anyother sources besides your beloved Sky News? Seriously! nope sowwy mate no faith in sky news friend? |

WOOOOOOO!!! visibility is cut, shit flys all over the place, video feeds lost.. then it reestablishes and... then the dust clears..... and the mothership is still there now put that in context of this oil thingie |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 930399 United States 05/27/2010 09:55 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | "The absence of any news is good news,'' said Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, who is overseeing the operation. He added: "It's a wait and see game here right now, so far nothing unfavorable".... Top kills were used to plug wells in Kuwait that were sabotaged by the withdrawing Iraqi army during the Persian Gulf War of 1990-91. But the technique has never before been attempted in waters of such depth; the mouth of the Deepwater Horizon well lies nearly a mile beneath the ocean's surface. "We'll determine over the next 24 hours whether that plan has been successful," Doug Suttles, chief operating officer of BP, said at an evening news conference. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary Landry said she was "very encouraged" but added, "I do not want to express optimism until we know for sure" that the procedure is working. [link to rawstory.com] |

Maguyver User ID: 808852 United States 05/27/2010 09:55 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Now that they have the oil and gas supressed, the will wait a bit to be sire everything is stable for a while. The have to keep the mud circulating, though. The will then add the cement which is quite a bit heavier than the mud. If all goes as planned, the cement will hold the mud down, and the O&G below that. It will set up and stop the flow. It's not a permanent fix because the cement isn't far enough down the bore hole. The kill well will do that. Adversity is inevitable, misery is optional. Do or do not. There is no try. "The enemy will never attack where you are strongest...He will attack where you are weakest. They are in wait and see mode. Venice, Louisiana (CNN) -- BP officials may know by Thursday afternoon whether the oil company's latest attempt to cap the runaway leak in the Gulf of Mexico is yielding results. "I think we just need to take the next 24 hours and actually see what the results are," said BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles from Robert, Louisiana. The operation, known as a "top kill," that began Wednesday afternoon was going according to plan, he said, with drilling mud being applied to the well at a rate of up to 65 barrels per minute. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Mary Landry, the federal on-scene coordinator, was equally reluctant to draw conclusions. "While we're very encouraged by some aspects of this procedure, I don't want to express optimism until I know for sure that we've secured the well and the leak has stopped," she told reporters. It's just gonna build up pressure and blow up like a big mud bomb. Quoting: Dark AgeTry turning on your garden hose then covering the the flow with mud until it it stops flowing, see how well that works the flow will find somewhere else to go or explode. It`s just not mud..it is a special mixture of chemicals also that makes it swell...Not sure that would be the correct word but it was on a video yesterday on Fox about the stuff they were shooting down there...I`m sure someone else can provide a link or explain it better. |
VVizz User ID: 981897 Singapore 05/27/2010 09:58 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It seems they did try the other solutions, to rescue the operation. After all, it is a huge pile of oil inside the ground. When They need to send in mud, it means they are forced to do so by the government. However, think twice. You drill a deep hole into the ground. You do pass several layers of strong plates of stone. People can say, well, it can be only sand. No. Because if this was the case, the oil could flow just like that into the sea. So there is a deep hole, they fill it with mud. When the mud is still flowing in, there is movement, so the mud can not fixate, neither dry or whatever. So even when the mud start to dry, it will be a weak solution to close the hole. After some time, the oil will press everything out, so the oil will flow again into the sea. Nuking or bombing the well, will make things even worse. Conclusion. Drilling into the sea, should be forbidden at all costs. The impact on the environment is too high when something happens. When things can not be fixed in a few days, it is not worth to drill, even there is a huge amount of oil downside. I do hope, goverment raise the bill so high to BP, extremely high for all the loss, for all the damage to the fisher man, the economic, the natural environment, so high, that no company even DARE to make such stupid acts. And a lot of responsable people on BP should be put to trail. Because it was known on the platform, the security was broken on the well, and they still keep pumping up oil. All the Best, VVizz of Ur |

Quoting: ^TrInItY^yup Well, let's hope this is successful. I was watching CNN and there were a lot of animals in distress 12 miles off the Louisiana coast. And they were not swimming in the orange broken up stuff, but the thickest nastiest black oil I've seen yet. Dolphins, fish, a shark, and a few crabs and a few other things just in the one area they were filming. This is already bad. How are they going to account for the animals that die out there and sink to the bottom? They should take the warning labels off of everything and let stupidity sort itself out. |
