Well, my optimistic side is telling me that as long the oil is slowed from coming from well, that this is indeed good news, despite whether it was actually permanently killed or not.

If they can at least slow the well for now, then it is at least a positive sign that the monster can be abated, and possibly stopped eventually.

UPDATE: BP Denies Significant Improvement In Oil Leak, Stock Still Surging


UPDATE: A tweet from BP denied improvement in the leak:"Top kill" operations continued over the night & are ongoing. There are no significant events to report at this time.
The tweet was sent at 8:43 a.m., precisely when the LA Times published its article.

Now that they have the oil and gas supressed, the will wait a bit to be sire everything is stable for a while. The have to keep the mud circulating, though. The will then add the cement which is quite a bit heavier than the mud. If all goes as planned, the cement will hold the mud down, and the O&G below that. It will set up and stop the flow.

It's not a permanent fix because the cement isn't far enough down the bore hole. The kill well will do that.

The odds are against this working.

"I think we just need to take the next 24 hours and actually see what the results are," said BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles from Robert, Louisiana.

The operation, known as a "top kill," that began Wednesday afternoon was going according to plan, he said, with drilling mud being applied to the well at a rate of up to 65 barrels per minute.

Coast Guard Rear Admiral Mary Landry, the federal on-scene coordinator, was equally reluctant to draw conclusions.

"While we're very encouraged by some aspects of this procedure, I don't want to express optimism until I know for sure that we've secured the well and the leak has stopped," she told reporters.

That's exactly what I figured would happen. :(

It`s just not mud..it is a special mixture of chemicals also that makes it swell...Not sure that would be the correct word but it was on a video yesterday on Fox about the stuff they were shooting down there...I`m sure someone else can provide a link or explain it better.

It seems they did try the other solutions, to rescue the operation. After all, it is a huge pile of oil inside the ground. When They need to send in mud, it means they are forced to do so by the government.

However, think twice. You drill a deep hole into the ground.
You do pass several layers of strong plates of stone. People can say, well, it can be only sand. No. Because if this was the case, the oil could flow just like that into the sea.

So there is a deep hole, they fill it with mud. When the mud is still flowing in, there is movement, so the mud can not fixate, neither dry or whatever.

So even when the mud start to dry, it will be a weak solution to close the hole. After some time, the oil will press everything out, so the oil will flow again into the sea.

Nuking or bombing the well, will make things even worse.

Conclusion. Drilling into the sea, should be forbidden at all costs. The impact on the environment is too high when something happens. When things can not be fixed in a few days, it is not worth to drill, even there is a huge amount of oil downside.

I do hope, goverment raise the bill so high to BP, extremely high for all the loss, for all the damage to the fisher man, the economic, the natural environment, so high, that no company even DARE to make such stupid acts.

And a lot of responsable people on BP should be put to trail. Because it was known on the platform, the security was broken on the well, and they still keep pumping up oil.

Well, let's hope this is successful. I was watching CNN and there were a lot of animals in distress 12 miles off the Louisiana coast. And they were not swimming in the orange broken up stuff, but the thickest nastiest black oil I've seen yet.

Dolphins, fish, a shark, and a few crabs and a few other things just in the one area they were filming.

This is already bad. How are they going to account for the animals that die out there and sink to the bottom?
