Sir Paul McCartney angers U.S. officials after George W. Bush joke at White House ceremony


Sir Paul McCartney has found himself in the middle of a row after making a joke about former U.S. President George W. Bush.
The Beatles legend made the quip after he was awarded the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song by President Barack Obama at the White House earlier this week.
After telling the audience: 'Getting this prize would just be good enough, but getting it from this president...', McCartney then made a comment about the former president's intelligence.

He said: 'It's a fantastic honour (for) the Gershwin family to give me this incredible award and for me to be awarded it by the Library of Congress. And in fact, after the last eight years, it's great to have a president who knows what a library is.'
And while his comments were met by cheers by his audience, some officials were left unimpressed by the joke.
House Minority Leader John Boehner even went as far as demanding an apology from the 67-year-old singer.

He said: 'Like millions of other Americans, I have always had a good impression of Paul McCartney and thought of him as a classy guy, but I was surprised and disappointed by the lack of grace and respect he displayed at the White House.
'I hope he'll apologise to the American people for his conduct which demeaned him, the White House and President Obama.'
Dana Perino, who was George W. Bush's White House press secretary, added to FOXNews.com: 'It was completely ungracious and undignified.

'And it showed how shallow people can be, and it was sad to me someone of Paul McCartney's stature can in one moment erase years of goodwill that he built up with so many people in America.'
Bush's former speechwriter Marc Thiessen, who labelled McCartney's comments 'crass' and 'rude', also pointed out that despite many quips about his intelligence during his time in office, Bush was in fact 'one of the best read presidents in recent history'.
In addition, Bush's wife Laura is a librarian.
Referring to McCartney's comments, Mr Thiessen said: 'One, it shows no class. Two, it's ignorant.'
