My daytime job is to travel across the parts of Texas, along the Gulf Coast, where I teach alternative non-visual techniques to children and adults who are blind or visually impaired. During my work week, when I am in town, I live alone in a flat just a block from the bay. I travel on most weekends, to see my darling child who lives inland with her mother.

It has been raining for three days. A hurricane has missed my own town but has uleashed rain on all the surrounding counties. I had a brief conversation, near the stairwell of my upstairs flat, with a woman who has been having marital problems. She said her husband was recently arrested for drinking and driving, while he was traveling to see her. She said they were splitting up and she was not going to let him come back to stay with her anymore. I listened for a moment, wished her well and then went to my room and drifted off to sleep. It was not a very restful night. In a break in the rain, I hear some skaters riding down the hill by my window and I wake up. I was thinking how all the night owls below me seem to have a strange life of sleeping all day and waking up at 10:00 PM only then to venture out into the streets...

Later in the night, I heard an argument in the flat next to mine. I woke up briefly and hoped the best for the woman and her husband. I couldn't help but remember my own struggles, with my deceased ex-wife, who died from alcoholism. I rolled over and went back to sleep. Around 4 AM, I awoke again to the sounds of screaming... but this time it is coming from below me. The anarchist skaters who live below me were playing a low budget horror movie. I then hear my downstairs neighbors laughing and howling at what I imagine are ware-creatures or vampires, who, from the sounds of it are devouring some poor soul that must have been caught in the path of those fictional monsters that rule the night. I shrug it all off, turn on a floor fan, so it can partially drown out the sound, then sleep until morning.

I awoke, prepared myself for the day and went to my car. Today, I am going to travel about 90 miles away, to see three different blind adults, in the city of Victoria, Texas. I lock the door that is at the bottom of the stairs below me and find my car had been vandalized in the night. Someone had thrown a rock through my back window. Am I the victim of a random drunk bent on violence, did one of the skaters believe I slighted them somehow or am I the innocent victim of a jealous husband?

I know I should report the attack to the police but I can't cancel my visits to those three clients I am scheduled to see. It is very important that I not break the trust of my blind clients over something I could just blow off and take care of later. I pull out all of the broken glass and put it in a downtown trash bin. As I am taking off, a downpour begins and I know my car is going to be soaked. I am still in shock a bit but then, driving along, I begin feeling anger welling up inside me. But who am I to be angry with? I pull over and sit under the overhead canopy of an abandoned gas station. I keep thinking how I can't let this thing turn me to revenge. It was then that I remembered 9-11, when the World Trade Center Towers both fell in their own footprint. There were the obvious bombers and since there are conspiracies that the wound was done by shadow elements within our own government. I remember the fear I felt but then... but then a few weeks later... I was in Chicago and while coming out a parking garage, I saw a crude cardboard sign on the back window of a van that said: "PEACE IS PATRIOTIC." I thought for a moment how that was the right response to what occurred on that horrible day. I thought how violence is a punishment to those that perpetuate it but also to those who then live in fear.

The rain has let up for a little bit and I drive on....

I am resolved to purchase a piece of plexi-glass today. I am going to put the plexi-glass on the opening where my window once wa; I am going to put the words, "PEACE IS PATRIOTIC," in large letters on my back window. I am going to let this be my response to whomever it was that acted out with violence against me. I can not live my life in fear... Fear is the vehicle of those who finance and start wars. Fear is the end of joy... I will not let fear destroy my joy... This will be my answer to the systems of this world....

wrong!! I have been listening to the elders talk for many years...staying up late at night hearing the many stories of when we fought the spanish cowards.....i know the truth and what my native elder have prophesied.
