Genetically Modified Crop on the Loose and Evolving in U.S. Midwest
Uh-oh...

Outside a grocery store in Langdon, N.D., two ecologists spotted a yellow canola plant growing on the margins of a parking lot this summer. They plucked it, ground it up and, using a chemical stick similar to those in home pregnancy kits, identified proteins that were made by artificially introduced genes. The plant was GM—genetically modified.

There has been no evidence to show that the herbicide resistance genes will either increase or decrease fitness to date. The finding provides, however, a warning for future genetic modifications that might increase fitness in all kinds of plants; it will be difficult to keep those traits on the farm and out of the wild. "The big concern is traits that would increase invasiveness or weediness, traits such as drought tolerance, salt tolerance, heat or cold tolerance" says weed scientist Carol Mallory-Smith of Oregon State University—all the traits that Monsanto and others are currently developing to help crops adapt to climate change. "These traits would have the possibility of expanding a species' range." In the case of canola, consider it done—at least in North Dakota.

From what I understand this is a lost battle. They have the corn, soy, wheat and now even sugar cane market cornered. There is no way most of our foods aren't affected. And it can not be contained. Where the wind blows...

ive wondered before if there might be a cost effective, or neutral even, way of checking or testing certain plants. nice thread.

You would think so but...

...these sick ass bastards will sue a small farmer and put them out of business for cross pollination with their crops...because of WIND....

BUT...

..."Nor does Monsanto claim ownership of the escaped plants, even those with multiple transgenes, according to company spokesman John Combest. "It has never been, nor will it be, Monsanto policy to exercise its patent rights where trace amounts of our patented traits are present in fields as a result of inadvertent means," although researchers would have to obtain a license from the company to work with the GM plant."

Double fucking standards when it costs them.

Ah yes, the legal loophole of their stated position. Its sickening it holds up in court. Maybe the states or counties need to sue them? And I am only half joking.

Re: Genetically Modified Crop on the Loose and Evolving in U.S. Midwest
Just came up to the US for a bit of a vacation. Spent 3 hours in Whole Foods today, got a whole load of goodies to take home. Had a fit when I found out kombucha tea really got pulled. I read that on a thread awhile back but forgot all about it. I love that stuff, tastes like champagne. Seems like they are going to attack the healthy food slowly but surely and we'll be left with frankenfoods.

Monsanto has had my panties in a wad for years. They obviously have a legal department that surpasses all others. Clarence Thomas used to be part of it.

I can't believe any sane person with any kind of morals or decency would work for that company, or own their stock. They are altering the global food supply. And when I say that to most people, they are like "duh, what? so?" I tell them, they aren't making strawberries more juicy or anything, they are implanting frog and other animal genes in with the plant's genes and making the plants do things like manufacture their own pesticides internally. And I just get blank stares! OMG, is head up the ass an epidemic or what?
Forgive your enemies, it messes with their heads.

Thoughts create, mind them well.
