if u go through california and through LA area , there is a place called Compton where u can safely pitch a tent.

Whatever you do, don't go west through Los Angeles. Go through Colorado and up over the Cascades.

Stay off the interstates as much as possible.

I highly recommend the 4 corners area for the visuals, and try to go through Monument Valley.

Stay away from Utah if you can, unless you are already a mo.

Try this on google maps

1. Roswell, NM UFO museums then due north Big empty road and easy ride to Interstate. head west.
2. Happy Jack, Az- Meteor Crater spectacular and museum, a little out of the way but worth it. Painted Desert and petrified forest are near by.
3. Monument Valley, Ut spectacular you'll never forget it Indian Reservation
4. Moab, Ut Arches National Park, spectacular too
5. First interstate west and then state highway to Scipio, Ut. Easiest and prettiest ride

Then Salt Lake City and through the Columbia River Gorge and that's the best and easiest, no switchbacks and mountains

Take 87 all the way to just south of Canadian border, then turn left! the only path that have every intersection at ground level. Start with 87 the gulf coast then follow it north north east.

Portland has a great airport, choice a seat on the left side of the plane out of San Antonio (via Houston) see the grand canyon, Colorado river, Rockies and Salt Lake from 20,000 feet only 5 hrs trip.

Travel during daylight hours so you don't miss anything.
