Doesn't matter how much "thinking for themselves" one does. It's hard to get anything out of "noone will be around by Dec 21,2012" other than just what it says. Why? Because that is what it states in plain, simple, clear terms.
It's not being a Nanny to point out that this only means maybe. It's simply common courtesy and only the right thing to do is point of the information that is simply missing, though for some reason you seem to intend that people can realize that it means "maybe" without any indication as such whatsoever.
If you're gonna purposely make things obscure for someone who might not know better, simply just to avoid writing a few extra words, then that is unfortunate. But personally I think you want to keep interest in the thread high and do it as an attempt to make things exciting.
