That book and the movie (The Martian Chronicles) bored me. Especially the part of Bernadette Peters played of the self indulgent heifer.

**Ok !! ... However This Was A Lesson ... That Was Being Taught ... In That Form ... In That Role ... & By That Actress !! ... While It Bothered You ... It Was Designed As Such ... TO ... Bother You ... To Get You To Think !!

But the part that did grasp my attention and has always stuck with me.. was the explosion of earth and the scene which you mentioned.

**Yes Indeed ... Very Very Dramatic !!!

Yes.. they were now the Martians... for there was no earth to go back to.

**That Is True !! ... Very True !!!

I guess in effect... that Mars destroyed itself with its
foolishness.

**In The Movie No ... That Is Not How It Was !! ... Of Mazar/Mars ... In Your "Reality" ... What Caused The Lifelessness On The Surface ... Was A Close Flyby Of An Asteroid/Meteorite ... Which Produced A Harmonic Resonance ... A Wave Form ... So To Speak ... That "Ripped Away" The Atmosphere Of The Planet ... Into Space !! ... All That Were On The Surface ... When This Happened ... Died Instantly !!
