They just need to write 'SLOW DOWN OR GET A TICKET!' in 3D. That'll enter more ppls consciousness than some ugly kid with clown shoes.

Re: Canada unveils new speed bump: optical illusion of a child *UPDATED*
Most drivers here don't seem to care if you are real.

I can't tell you how many times I have had to bang on the hood of a car to prevent it from running me over at an intersection "walk" sign.

They are too busy on their phones, or eating lunch etc. to pay attention to pedestrians.

Well the reason you probably have almost been run over several times is the sheer fact that it seems as though Canadians have no sense of urgency when crossing the street. They just walk into the road and expect cars to see them and come to a halt. I am up in the Vancouver area for a couple of months from the US and cannot tell you how many times I have seen pedestrians just walk into the street without even looking. And then once they are walking across the street, they walk so slow as if it is on purpose. If you are one of the stupid Canadians who walks into the street without looking then you are probably looking to get hit by a car. There is no way with all the traffic and crazy drivers around here that I would walk across the street without a light on one of those crosswalks that is basically two parallel lines. I would select a crosswalk at a light if it were me.

Oh, and that stupid 3-D painting in the street in West Vancouver costs $15,000!!!!! Wow, way to use your tax payer dollars Canada. What about when it wears off or can you see it during the 10 months it rains here? And I agree with all the other posters...people that drive around there will just get used to it or you are going to get one of the 100 year old drivers who can't see, swerve to avoid the "thing" in th street and hit an actual person on the sidewalk! I would not be walking anywhere near that painting. This is the most retarded thing I have ever heard of.

I am also no sure why they need this 3-D painting here - everyone drives slow enough to drive Miss Daisy around here.

Does this mean long traffic jams when some old guy stops waiting for the kid to shift?

What happens when people become desensitized to this then start to roll through knowing it is optical illusion. Then a real child gets trucked. Fail

I don't go the school speed limit if its a high school. I figure if there in high school they know enough to stay outta the road. Does this make me bad?

THAT.

Or someone panics, thinking it's a real kid and either get slammed from a tailgater, swerves into oncoming traffic.

Funny in texas we have fake speed bumps, they looks real but is just a graphic banner of a picture of a nasty tall speed bump.

They could always just do 3=D illusions of massive potholes.

Or, save money on roads too and just not repair the real ones

Good deal, I like the idea of training people to hit kids in the road... Although you don't get any points for hitting pictures of kids...

Good concept, bad implementation. They should change it just be dollar signs $$ popping up. I bet you that people would remember real quick they are in a school zone.

what happens when someone is speeding along, say at 45mph, not paying attention, sees it at the last instant and in a panic losses control? Maybe the car winds up in the schoolyard hitting many REAL children.

Bad Idea!

first off, it's not your street. Second, its none of your buisness how fast I'm going. Third, why not just paint a 3d image of a "slow" sign.

There are ~ 160,000 auto accidents in Canada yearly. 1 accident per every 200 people (tot pop 34 million).

There are ~ 6,420,000 auto accidents in U.S. yearly. 1 accident for every 50 people, (tot pop 310 million).

So the U.S. has 4x the number of auto accidents as Canada.

I agree with the posters who stated this is an accident waiting to happen.

Bad Idea.

I am all for slowing down through residential neighborhoods, we even have speed humps through part of my neighborhood.

I would feel sickened rolling slowly over that even, if it didn't cause me to wreck thinking it was a real child that is.

Crazy, whose idea was this????

Why don't they just clear the street on a teacher's work day, run the school zone anyway, park some cop on the side of the road, and everytime he sees someone blasting through the school zone, toss a realistic dummy in front of the speeding car. That'll teach 'em a lesson lol.
