We used the money to pay off some credit cards. Quoting: watchyousleepnurseNow, we owe $4100. I sent them a request to make payments which the IRS granted. I mailed in $100. $4000 balance, right.?? NOOOOOOO... Today, I received a statement saying we now owe $4185,00. The $185 is for interest, penalty and late fee. My husband wants to call a tax attorney, but I don't know what he can do. We owe the $$$. We just have very little income this year and cannot pay it all off!! File BK |

I didn't think an IRS lien could be discharged in BK court... Correct me if I am wrong. I am constantly battling with myself over working. I work 2 jobs just to pay min payments on all our debt. If I quit work, file BK, life would somehow be easier? however, not able to get a loan on a car, a house??? lots to consider. |

As long as you send the IRS money pretty regularly, they'll leave you alone. But their computer will continue to generate the scary letters stating what you owe while tallying up the interest charges. It's not like anyone really knows you exist, it's all computer done. Just make sure you keep track of what you send them, like all cancelled checks. They make mistakes, too. They won't be filing leins and stuff like that unless you totally ignore them or don't hardly pay anything. Why didn't your employer withhold taxes on the 20K? Forgive your enemies, it messes with their heads. Thoughts create, mind them well. |

I know people that paid for one and they still had to pay. I would take the earlier advice and pay it now. No payments, pay it in full. Whether credit card, loan, whatever. Don't get them on you or they will become your shadow. |

Sell the story to them, do your best used car salesman lines...they'll definitely take it. Otherwise they have to spend man hours collecting, and believe me, they HATE DOING THAT. Catseye User ID: 985755 Dominican Republic 10/30/2010 05:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The best place for some free advice is your local H&R Block office. The won't charge you unless they end up filling out a form. Ask for the most experienced guy or gal in there and ask them about it. I worked HRB for 15 years and helped countless people with their IRS problems. They aren't all that scary as long as your paperwork jives and you don't ignore them. Get a loan to pay it off if you want, but just make sure the interest on the loan isn't more than the interest the IRS is charging you. Also consider the fact that the IRS will withhold your next refunds until your debt is paid off. I hope you're not in a state with income tax. Forgive your enemies, it messes with their heads. Thoughts create, mind them well. |

We actually paid off debt with the 20K all CC with high interest rates. I will definitely look into tax advocacy and HR Block. Thanks GLPers' awesome advice as always!! |

We actually paid off debt with the 20K all CC with high interest rates. I will definitely look into tax advocacy and HR Block. Thanks GLPers' awesome advice as always!! If your credit is good, you might try going to the bank to get a personal loan. The interest rate on a personal loan should be cheaper than any interest the IRS or credit card companies would charge you. I think going to HR Block is a better idea than going to a tax attorney in your case. I don't think the amount you owe is large enough to make it worth your while to pay the fees a tax attorney would charge for his services. If the amount you owed was much larger, then a tax attorney would be the way to go, but not for $4K. If you do decide to get a personal loan, it may not be a good idea to tell them why you need the money. I don't know. I just think it is safer for you to owe money to the bank rather than owe money to the IRS. And also cheaper. |
BarbieD User ID: 1081807 United States 10/30/2010 06:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The interest will keep accumulating! But from experience I can tell you, call the IRS and ask for help. Sometimes they will even make the amount you owe LESS. (sometimes) I think they even stopped interest on what I owed as long as I paid every month what I agreed to pay. The woman was surprisingly very nice. And this was before all the financial mess. Give it a shot |

Sell the story to them, do your best used car salesman lines...they'll definitely take it. Otherwise they have to spend man hours collecting, and believe me, they HATE DOING THAT. All the IRS wants to do is CLEAR ITS BOOKS..that's it! The IRS does not spend countless man hours collecting a $4,100 tax debt since most of the "collecting" is done by computer. If you don't pay, the IRS knows who you work for and where you bank. They will get their money one way or another. Further, I used to work for the IRS and most settlement offers (called Offers in Compromise) are rejected. Some people who are temporarily unable to pay can have their account put in a "Currently Non Collectible" status. However, the IRS computers monitory the tax payer's yearly income and when it goes over a certain amount, the taxpayer automatically receives notices demanding payment. The IRS computer system is unlike anything in the world. If you knew the information it contained you would know not to fuck with the IRS. But, hey, if you think a sad story will work, go for it. IRS agents deserve a good laugh every now and then. |
