I'd say it is just like an EVP.

I have a digital voice recorder, I used to leave it to record while I was in bed, I always stayed awake as it was recording so if I caught anything I could dismiss any noises around me.
It would only record for 43 mins so not too long. But one day I caught something that I couldn't explain, it freaked me a little so I haven't recorded since.
