I think evolution has instilled into mankind the idea that family is critical for the survival and evolution of the child. Hence a father must play his part in instilling the male aspect of humanity into the child and the mother do the same from the female aspect. Given both, the survivability and thrivability of the child is much, much higher. This, of course, would not occur if the family is split and either the father or mother cannot provide presence.
