SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily)

Nothing but constant electrical trouble at work Monday. Servo communication faults all day. Drive fuses blowing. PLC’s acting wonky. Gonna be an interesting few weeks.

Solen estimates the size of AR3615 at 1680 millionths in area. That would make it the largest sunspot of Cycle 25 so far.

Now that she is leaving the scene this will be the one to crank off a CME that is no longer earth directed. So odd that earth is usually and conveniently protected when danger is in view.

Is it possible I feel the effects already.

Weird headache like the other day when X hit.

Some people seems to be sensitive to X-flares and even some strong M's. I sometimes get a headache but only of a CME is heading our way.

I used to get a headache when an X was growing. Not so much now

Gee, you guys have a very short attention span.

Six days ago we had Earth-directed CME which sparked a Severe G4 geomagnetic storm (the strongest in years). And it was due to X-flare a mid-disk.

I just laugh when I hear this "Earth-facing Quiet' nonsense.

GIANT SUNSPOT APPROACHES "THE DANGER ZONE": After a few days of stalled progress, sunspot AR3615 is growing again. A 50% increase in surface area since yesterday has ballooned one of its dark cores to triple the size of Earth. "I saw the sunspot this morning just off the wingtip of an RAF A400," says Marc Charron, who sends this picture from Ayr, Scotland:


"The plane was doing training circuits from Prestwick, Scotland, and on one pass it crossed the sun from where I was standing," says Charron. "The massive sunspot group AR3615 was clearly visible through the clouds, while AR3619 and AR3614, respectively, can be seen above that group."

As Charron's photo shows, AR3615 is approaching the western edge of the sun. That's "the danger zone." Sunspots located there are magnetically connected to Earth via the Parker Spiral. If AR3615 erupts while it is transiting the danger zone, energetic protons and electrons may be funneled back toward our planet for a days-long radiation storm. Stay tuned!

X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: Giant sunspot AR3615 just produced another strong solar flare. Peaking on March 28th at 2053 UT, the X1-class explosion ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere and caused a deep shortwave radio blackout over the Pacific Ocean. This follows similar blackouts over over the Indian Ocean and South America earlier the same day due to strong M-class flares. AR3615 is active again, and more flares may be in the offing. AR 3615 produced an X1.1 solar flare peaking at 20:56 UTC (Mar 28).

Just like all of the other flares around this region, it does not look like a noteworthy coronal mass ejection (CME) will be associated. The large sunspot cluster continues to move closer towards the southwest limb.

Our big friend AR 3615 continues to move closer towards the southwest limb and is producing frequent minor C-Flares and occasional low level M-Flares. A noteworthy solar flare above the M5.0 level is still a possibility, however the chances for an Earth directed eruption of plasma (CME) will continue to decline with each passing day.

All other sunspot regions on the visible disk are currently stable and non threatening.
