As an addendum to that to clarify things... the way radioactivity works is this:

You have an unstable molecule - it emits an atomic particle in an attempt to become more stable. This emission creates energy (gamma rays) which is the radiation, the particles themselves are also radiation (alpha/beta/neutron).

Each time it does this it changes state. Each state has a certain half life. Plutonium 239's half life is 24,100 years. Which means that after 24,100 years, only half of it will remain, the rest will have changed into something else.

I agree.. just pour tons n tons of concrete over it, using plastersiser (for strength) & latex (for waterproofing), just fill it all in, then cover all that with liquid glass..

Robots will only work for a limited time. The Russians used automated and robotic land movers to push and move the radioactive graphite from the area and what happened was the radiation was effecting the systems of the automation. Radiation isn't good for people or electronics even materials. Even if you are able to harden the electronic boxes and such eventually they will lose the ability to respond. This will burn for years.

that might work if they added some good rebar structure, but they have to get the fuel rods down first. It would take years, and how can they cap off the bottom half?
