Madonna's version, notice all the water in the film and the Lion and Madonna hooks up with a non human stand in. The symbolism is definitely there in the form of the man in a Lions mask.



Now look at the "Moulin Rouge" version. Notice the picture in the background, the woman now coloured green is with what can only be described as a devil with horns.

The Duke in the movie really a stand in for an alien over seeing and making demands of man leaders, or elite?
He is wearing a cloak which he moves about like it is really wings and makes lion gestures.
